Are Hi-Point handguns worth a darn? Those of us who are "financially challenged" but are looking for something reliable to keep in a nightstand seem to have very limited options. What are some choices?

I've handled them, not what I would want to put my life on the line with. Oddly enough, a lot of people have said they are more reliable than you would guess. Their 45acp and 40S&W are very blocky and uncomfortable. Their 9mm is better designed to fit the human hand. A good used S&W revolver should cost about the same and be much better built. I have to admit though, the company stands behind their product. Of the few cases where one had to be sent in, the factory took care of it, no problem.

I agree, look for a nice used S&W revolver in 38spl or larger.

Thanks for the input...being new to the site I am learning as I go. One day I hope to contribute also.As for buying handguns,I guess the old addage "you get what you pay for" is a good rule of thumb. I do however want to buy American made whenever possible.

Hi-points make great experimental guns. When i say experiment i mean "i wonder what would happen if i shot it with a S&W .44 magnum?" hmmm lets go experiment.

The Witness line has had good reviews in both 9mm and 45 ACP, the Charles Daly has mixed reviews, Tarus makes a good line both revolvers and autos, used Glocks are fairly inexpensive $350-$400 ... but when you say "financially challenged" thats a little vague as to the price range you want to be in.A PA-63 or Makrov can be a good buy for $125 or less or even a CZ-52 in 7.62X25 for a little more power around $150 or CZ-52 in 9mm, $175-$200 ... lots of GOOD choices out there in lots of price ranges.Models to stay away from ... anything made by Jennings, Bryco or Raven ... even if the did pass the Kalifornia drop tests! Just because they didn't fire when they were dropped doesn't mean they WILL chamber or fire when you want or need it to!

i bought a hi-point .45 for 159.00 just to have around .i've shot it about 100 times with no problems.i took a pistol marksman course at the local range and used the hi-point and a gp-1oo ruger 6"barrel 50 shots with each.all the hi-point groups were smaller than the rugers.

as kimberkid said, I carried and used a full size eaa witness for 5 years before buying a kimber ultra. But the witness can be had for around 300.00 and they have a compact version also. this gun is a cz clone and very dependable

Tacomoha- I had a high point .45, I bought brand new for $170 out the door. The first 50 shots, I probably had about a dozen jams, but none after that. The break-in period I guess. I used to call it my shoebox gun, because it was so big bulky and square. It was a deffinate piece of junk, but it did shoot until the frame cracked. I sent it back, and they sent me a brand new one, which I sold to a bud for $170 and got my money back. I wouldn't buy another one, but I wouldn't say I didn't get my money's worth. And I wouldn't believe it would outshoot a Ruger GP-100 for the world, I don't have a GP, but I do have a Security Six and the High Point didn't group even close.

dragunov,i know its hard to believe, but it happened.maybe it was the harder trigger pull on the ruger.i dont know why but the hi-point shot smaller groups.its a cheap gun but some people want a cheap gun.

I agree, I came off a little wrong, I'm sorry. I'm generally neutral on highpoint firearms. For the price you pay, you defenatly getting more than what you pay for. Though it isn't pretty, it does shoot, and if it don't all you have to do is send it back to MKS and they'll fix it or send you another one. And in the under $200 range it puts Lorcin to shame...

But I will say that if you take your time and shop around, you can find better guns that are usually more expensive in the same pricerange used. For instance, I remember seeing an add in Shotgun News for Used Smith and Wesson Military & Police Revolvers for $99used or $129very good.

I've owned a 9mm Hi-Point for a couple of years. I have put literally hundreds of rounds through it. There were only 3 hangups and they were on Winchester bulk rounds. Nothing else. No other times. Additionally, it out shoots my Glock, S&W, and H&R. I put targets up side by side and can always out shoot any of my other handguns. Same shooter, different weapons. In short, I can't say enough for the Hi-Point. I recommend them regularly.

    Just my 2 cents..

Okay, ten years has to be the all time record for dragging up threads. Why anyone would think that a Hi Point thread is worth responding to after a full decade is something that escapes me, as well as why this was not locked at ten back in 2001! Lets try to stay a bit more current.
