They were imported from March through May of 1994. As of May 28th there was no more imports of these from China, but there was a large shipment of Chinese rifles, SKS's, MAK 90's, and UZI's that got in under the wire. That shipment sat in a customs warehouse until late 1994. It was released and the market was flooded with Chinese rifles. It was in the following 2 years that the prices on the Chinese guns got to be their lowest, after they were no longer coming into the country. The UZI sporters started out at $650-750. By 1995-1996 You commonly saw them down to $350-500. Today anywhere from $500-700 would be expected. They work okay, but a lot of people don't like the thumbhole stock. Unfortunately putting a regular stock or folding stock on them is illegal. That's why some people are still willing to pay twice the price for an Israeli UZI. By the way, the Chinese UZI was imported by the same company that imported the Israeli model. In fact that was the company that protested the import of the Chinese one back in the late 1980's. They got the prospective import of the Chinese one halted so that it wouldn't interfere with the sale of their Israeli one. Yet it was the same company that approached the Chinese in 1993 and asked if they could still make or still had the same rifle and offered to not only not protest the import of the gun, but actually be their exclusive importer. So it wasn't an issue of quality, it was rather an issue of competition.
