Immediate help! Value of Portuguese Kropatschek and rarity?
I just bought what I thought was a German 71/84 for $375 including tax. But then I started to notice minor differences from what the book said about the 71/84. Come to find out it is a Portuguese Kropatschek in 8mm! I couldn't see the damn difference! The place I bought it will take a return but only for a few days. What is this rifle worth? It is in VG condition. Bore near mint, blueing 90%, action tight and crisp, stock good plus. All cartouches very crisp. If I made a real steal, great. Otherwise, back it goes!

Relatively rare for a military rifle, but a fair amount have found their way into the U.S.: Model 1886 Rifle, total production 49,000. 1886 Short Rifle, 4,800. 1886 Carbine, 4,000. Barrel lengths are (for identification) 31.55 in., 25.85 in., and 20.5 in. respectively. Value depends on variation and condition. Playing the odds, you probably are looking at the rifle version. $325 in V.G. condition. 0 -
That makes me feel a bit better. I paid $350 plus tax and with no import marks and matching serials, and in VG condition, if I overpaid, I only did so by a bit. Still, I'm gonna call the seller as he advertised it as a Mauser 71/84- an understandable mistake, as it is virtually identical except for the cleaning rod, markings, and minor bolt differences. And of course caliber. I'm not upset though- kind of like expecting a boy and getting a girl. You learn to love the unexpected as soon as its there, you know? Not that I have any kids, but I get the idea.

I'm amazed this post was still active after 6 years.
I have a Portuguese Mauser that I purchased on an impulse about 6 months ago and have been considering selling to make some room in my safe. After your post, maybe I should keep it.0
