No guns on vacation?

Someone told me that you cannot buy a pistol when not in the state you live. Is this true? If so, does this apply to purchases from individuals as well? I am in Louisiana if that makes a difference.-Marcus

    YOU CAN BUY A GUN IN ANY STATE, BUT, AND A BIG BUT, THE GUN MUST BE SHIPPED TO YOUR STATE, TO A FFL DEALER ,AND YOU CAN THEN PICK UP THE GUN THERE. THIS APPLIES ONLY TO HANDGUNS. BE SAFE.

    Does the contiguous state law still apply?

    "contiguous state law" doesn't apply anymore, even for long guns. Just have to be able to legally own a long gun in your state, and you can buy one in another state with no problems, assuming background check goes through.

    What about from private sellers? Is it illegal and just not inforced (because it can't be) or can you buy a handgun from a private seller out of state?

    Non-licensee private sales depend on your state laws. In ND, it is ok for a non-licensee sale of a handgun to another non-licensee, as long as they both are a resident of ND. It is against the law for a non-licensee from ND to sell and transfer a handgun to another non-licensee from another state.Check your state laws for in-state transfers.

    CO and TX are same as ND, but in CO at gun shows, transfer of any firearm must go through FFL.

    The "gun show loophole" law passed last November as a result of the Columbine event. The girl who bought the guns for the two killers said she would not have done it had she been required to go through a background check. The promoter of a show has to provide an FFL and post specific signs at the parking lot entrance and inside the show stating the requirement. By the letter of the law, if any part of a transaction (such as seeing the gun on a table) occurs at a gun show, it requires the background check, even if the buyer contacts the seller later. I will be the transfer FFL at a local show this weekend.
