The Model 31 is the immediate predecessor of the Remington 870. An exploded view and disassembly instruction can be found in "Firearms Assembly" - The NRA Guide to Rifles and Shotguns - copyright 1993.You should not have any major difficulties if you have ever taken an 870 down and cleaned it. Unless it is really grundgy, you don't need to to a complete disassembly - just a field strip. I use Simple Green that you can get from Lowe's or Home Depot and a soft toothbrush. Rinse everything down and dry with a hair dryer. Then hose down with Break Free and use a high temperature lithium grease on the groove that the action bar slides in. By the way - be careful when cleaning that groove - the edges can be very sharp and cut your fingers.Having said that - I will defer to two gunsmiths on this forum - the german bird hunter - Der Gebirdsjager from Oregon and the Montana gunsmith - rwfixum. They may have completely different advice for you.I know for sure that I would like to join you in the field for a pheasant hunt with my German Shorthaired and German Wirehaired pointers. I have a Damascus barreled hammer gun, and a bunch of solid brass shotshells loaded with a black powder substitute and number 6's that I would love to try on pheasant.

Hey Adams, would you use simple green on just about any gun, or would there be exceptions? .218

218Beekeep"er:I would have thought you would have been set up at the Lakeland show this weekend. Did the tropical storm sock you in? We got some much needed rain - the pasture will look much better in a few days. I will probably have to get the John Deere out and mow, but I am not complaining. In a couple of cases, when the gunsmith that I use and I opened up the guns, Simple Green would not remove some of the really caked on stuff that had gone to varnish. We had to go to much more powerful solvents. I don't like using them, because I had rather work bare handed which I can do with the Simple Green. But when it won't work on the "varnish", I glove up and use a more powerful solvent.CUDA:Sorry for stepping all over your question. Hopefully "DER" and "RWFIXUM" will come on line and give you their ideas shortly.

AQH--Thanks for the response; since I've always been a Mossberg user, it'll be a learning experience. However, most of my shooting buddies use 870's so I should be able to get a hand if necessary. Thanks again for the help.
