Reloading 8MM Mauser

For IMR 4064 and 150gr. bullet, my book shows 32.3gr start with a max of 36.0 gr. Start at the lower end and work up to the max; note that most 8mm mauser loads tend to be on the mild side as many older, weaker guns can (often improperly) chamber the cartridge. I suspect you could work up to about 40 grains safely in a Yugo Mauser, but if you do so, you didn't hear if from me! Also, make sure you have good deer hunting bullets- that is, some sort of soft tip, hollow point, etc.... not just an FMJ, as this is liable to punch right through a deer and merely wound, unless you hit something really vital.

You didn't ask about this, but I have made 8x57 (8mm Mauser) brass by running 30-06 brass through my 8x57 sizing die. Then trimed it to proper length. I did this years ago when 8x57 brass was hard to come by.

I have used both factory 8mm and 30-06 with pretty much identical results. One note on using 30-06- be sure the case neck is ok after resizing; it is a fairly intense operation, and may crack the case if too brittle or not well lubed.

Ah, the oldest post I could find by me in the archives... and I am bringing it to the forefront to say that the books are wrong and that you can, in a Yugo 98, easily push 48 gr of 4064 and a 150 gr bullet.... how little I knew then.

Help ! I bought some IMR 4060 and 150 gr. speer spitzers. But my book only shows hodgen powder.(Ya,I'm new)Any way,the gun is a 98 mauser with the Yugo crest.I'm want to hunt Mule deer with it,what does your books show and what do you suggest? Oro

We're presuming you mean IMR 4064 - correct? It's a good choice for the 8mm Mauser and the 150 grain is a very good all around bullet weight. You really should pick up a few other reloading books and can find them cheap at gun shows, I guarantee you'll find alot of info on the 8mm. The Lee Reloading manual has alot of info, but it's not brand specific by bullet.

I've used 46 grains of IMR 4064 with a 150 grain for years in 98s, a Remington 700 classic and now in a T/C Encore handgun.

    oro,

The high forties loads quoted to you for IMR4064 (they dont make a 4060) powder is where you should be at. The rifle you have will take as much pressure as just about any modern rifle out there. Once you get comfortable reloading you can work off pressure signs. And hopefully if you get more into reloading you will get yourself a chrono to measure bullet speed. If nothing else you won't feel bad because factory rounds rarely get what they advertise. I load 52 gr. of IMR4064 behind a 150 gr. bullet for a velocity of 2930 out of my Yugo M48BO. If you go that far, you will need to work up to it slowly. -good luck

Hard to believe it hasn't been mentioned yet.

The biggest thing I get out of loading is finding the sweet load that your gun likes....A load that gives you good groups consistently. A load that probably is not available anywhere but from your bench.

Sure, there are times when I load looking for power, but those are rarely the rounds that group best.

    ENJOY !!!
