Steyr/Sigma?
Are the Steyr M series pistols indentical to the S&W Sigma's? Do the mags interchange?I've been told that the Sigma was a disappointment, and that it was not a high-quality and reliable firearm. Do any of you know this from personal experience?Have any of you fired this Steyr in .40? How did you like it, and how well did it perform? Is it a traditional DA/SA, and what kind of safety/decock does it have? How are the trapazoid sights? Thanks, Brisco

I had a Steyr S-9 but never shot it. The sights were to odd for me.The Sigma magazines will work with some modifications. You can find out about the mods at Steyrforum.com 0 -
I have a Steyr M40, and overall it is considerably good. However, it is fair to tell you that I had to ship mine to Steyr(GSI) several times for upgrades and ejector repairs. After these repairs and tunings were perfrmed, the pistol is "almost" perfect (nothing really is). The most noticable diference in this particular pistol is the recoil or the lack thereof. Compared to a SIG oor HK in 40SW, the recoil is much less due to the lower axis of the barrel. NOw for the sights...this is a case to case basis as far as evaluationg them goes. It works fine for me, but you might not like it. They take some getting used to.STEYR/SW SIGMA What possessed the person who told you that they are the same? These are two entirely different pistols, and the magazines are specifically made for each one. Unless you dont mind spending $$$ for repairs and personal injuries incurred during a malfunction, it might not be a good idea to even attempt this.Good Luck,-Smooth 0 -
Ok, hang on....someone actually tried stunt with an SW mag and it worked? Very interesting. I tried looking for www.steyrforum.com and cant find it. Would anyone care to post the website again?-Smooth 0 -
I have both. I prefer the grip shape and angle of the Sigma (I think the Sigma grip shape and angle are among the best there is), while the Steyr M9/M40 has the Glock grip angle. The Steyr also has some great features, like its safety and very low bore axis. I do not like the sights on the Steyr, but some do. The Sigma is Smith & Wesson's Glock (so similar that there was a lawsuit over the similarities, which Smith lost), while the M9/M40 is Steyr's Glock. The Sigma is a fine pistol, but probably does not measure up to the Glock in durability (what does?). The headstart and acceptance of the Glock in the market probably means the Sigma will always be in the shadow of the Glock. The Steyr was designed to be as good as (or better than) the Glock, but only time will tell if that goal has been met. (So far it does not appear it has, but remember Glocks are known for blowups and some other early problems, so it is hard to compare a mature design with a new design.) They are all of similar trigger action, not really single or double action, but what I would describe as a "long, heavy" single action. The Sigma and Steyr can best be described as Glock-like in their operation. The Steyr trigger has been upgraded to improve it. My Steyr has not been so modified.I discovered and have posted the magazine adaptation possibility. When I got my Steyr M40, I thought the magazines looked a lot like my Sigma .40 magazines. Sure enough, the body shape is identical, but the latch holes are in different places. With the same body shape, I assumed the Sigma magazine would work in the Steyr if it could be held in place. To test my theory, I taped the Sigma magazine into my Steyr and fired away. The Sigma magazine worked perfectly, including locking the slide open. All that was left to do was cut a new latch hole in the Sigma magazine, which I did. I now have a 15+1 Steyr M40! (I assume the 9mm Sigma magazines would also work in a Steyr M9, but have not tried that conversion.) The modified Sigma magazine still works in the Sigma. If the Steyr had the grip of the Sigma and regular sights, it would be my choice of the three. As it is, I really do not like any of them well enough to carry any of them. 0 -
Thanks Bisko. It works perfectly!!!! Notch out a new mag catch about 1/4in above S&W's original mag catch.
