Feedback on Remington 597
I am interested in getting a Remington 597 .22LR. Can anyone tell me how this rifle preforms. It would be just for target shooting, nothing serious. Also, does a scope work well on it. If so, what kind would you suggest?-Marcus

I have a 597 in 22 WMR and it is a good gun. Shoots very well. Only fault is you have to be careful loading the clip or it will not feed correctly. Scope mounting is easy. Remington makes a rail that uses Weaver style rings or you can use dovetail mounts. My gun functions and shoots very well but my friend has one identical to it and it has had jamming problems since it was new. This is the WMR version but the LR version should be simular. 0 -
I own one in .22lr with black synthetic stocks. I like the way it feels in my hands, the barrel is nice, sights are good. I would aftermarket out because I likemost of its factory stuff. Shoots very good offhand, never bothered to bench and group it. I don't however like the factory magazines, they really really really suck. They cause the gun to jam alot. And I don't like that there is no way of manually locking the bolt open like in marlins. I just can't wait until some decent aftermarket magazines come out, that will fix the jamming problem.I would go with a Ruger 10/22 or a marlin instead, but I won the 597 at a Ducks Unlimited Banquet so I'm not complaining to much.Lightning- Something I do to deal with the jamming is I don't load the magazines up all the way. I only put 4 or 5 rounds in each mag. And I hit the back in my palm to line up the bullets, kinda like you see GI's do against their helmets in movies. 0 -
leeblackman,I was actually considering the Ruger 10/22 as well. What's your take on it? Same questionsas the Remington.-Marcus 0 -
Get you a used 10/22 for cheap, through away the old stock and barrel, replace them with Hogue overmold and 16" bull barrel, then mount a reflex type optics, put competition trigger kit in it for a short sweet pull and name it "The Squirrel Buster."The 10/22 is a very versitile .22lr, you can buy so many aftermarket parts for them its not even funny. It has to be the most popular and modifiable semi auto rimfire rifle on the market. I've seen some very unique and exotic 10/22's before. The 10/22 has to be the standard that all .22 rimfire automatic rifles are made by. You can buy them everywhere, you can find magazines for them and parts everywhere. I think that the standard model is about $120 new. I found them cheaper at sporting good stores than dealers. 0 -
Having wanted a .22 magnum for several months, I plan on purchasing the Remington 597 HB laminated stock in June. I already have a Ruger 10/22 in .22 LR. My Ruger has an aftermarket heavy barrel by Hogue. The Ruger 10/22 magnum is more costly than the Remington 22 magnum. I will be adding a scope shortly after I buy the Remington. I would like to see the CZ 452 American .22 magnum as a possible future buy. 0 -
I have a factory 597 and it will out shoot any factory 10/22 I shot against. Once they figured out the magazine problem they turned out to be a great little gun. The only bad thing is it don't like the cheap ammo, it'll eat those the CCI's real will though. I put a tasco pronghorn 3x9 on it.

If your looking for a reliable, in-expensive 22lr, the Ruger 10/22 is probably the best buy on tyhe market today. Also, if you are looking for a 22wmr, the Ruger 10/77 bolt action, is a great gun for the money, and very accurate. I have one with four magazines, and it is a blast too shoot. Can dump squirrels at 200 yards all day long, and the ammo is really not too expensive. Not as cheap as 22rl, but more fun too shoot, counting on the increased accuracy out to 2 hundred yards. Loads of fun!!![:D][:D]

Ruger over the Remington anyday atleast on the 22lr models. Big problems with Remington feeding . They were switching the plastic clips out at the factory for the metal ones and still having problems. Also the 10/22 has a ton of aftermarket accessories that make this one a no brainer. As for the magnum we still feel the same about the 597 but Ruger also had some problems on their early 10/22 mags. They have since fixed the flaws so we hear. The 77/22 mag that a poster above mentioned is a bolt action rifle not a semi. Hope this helps.
