OLD WINCHESTER 30-30
WE HAVE A WINCHESTER 30-30 LEVER ACTION, WITH A OCTAGON NICKEL STEEL BARREL SERIAL #611700 IT HAS MODEL 1894 WINCHESTER STAMPED ON IT, ALSO STAMPED ON IT IS 30W C.F. STILL LOOKS DECENT AND SHOOTS GOOD, JUST WONDERING IF SOMEONE MIGHT KNOW ITS APPROX. VALUE AND WHEN IT WAS MADE AND IF IT IS AN "ANTIQUE", ITS BEEN IN THE FAMILY FOR AT LEAST 60 YEARS -THANKS

It has 20" barrel The bluing appears original. It has a saddle ring fitting however the attached ring is missing. It has some superficial scratches on the metal, and slight wear marks on the stock. It has a graduated flip up rear sight with graduations of 5-10-15-20 on the rear slide flip up sight. No rust, or prior rust pitting.

Hello chipper...
First, a few things need to be set straight...
1. Your Model 1894 is NOT an "Antique" firearm. In order for it to legally qualify as such, the date of manufacture must be on or before December 31st, 1898. Based on the serial number on your Winchester, it was manufactured circa 1913/1914.
2. If the octagon barrel is original to the gun, it is definitely not a Saddle Ring Carbine.
3. The standard barrel length for an octagon barreled Model 1894 Rifle was/is 26-inches versus 24-inches.
Now that the air has been cleared, here is what I surmise concerning your Model 1894... The fact that it has a saddle ring strongly suggests that the barrel is not original to the gun, as Saddle Ring Carbines were never manufactured with octagon barrels. You did not mention what the length of the barrel actually is, nor did you tell us if it has a full length magazine tube. Also of interest is the specific type of butt plate (what is it made of, and what shape is it?). Next, does it have a superposed "WP" in an oval stamped on both the reciever and the barrel?
Based on the information provided thus far, I believe that you have a piece parts gun, and as such, the collector value will be quite low.

all very valid Bert H. an good points as well, But keep in mind that a gun back in those days could be special order in any configuration, he should get it letterd from B C, before he gives it up as a part gun. i did have a 92 that was a parts gun an a little rough i mite add but it brought 750 [flared stock, 20 oct, 1/2 tube, blue40-60%] but it was
a low "1st yr 4 digit ser#." Maybe some one here could post the Winchester Coty museum address for chipper or chip123

Hello Mr. Gee...
One of the very few things that could NOT be special ordered (no matter how much money you offered to pay), was an octagon barrel on a Saddle Ring Carbine (and this holds true for the Models 1873, 1876, 1886, and 1892). Instead, Winchester offered what was known as a "Short" Rifle, and due to that fact, that is why I asked the follow-up questions about the magazine and the butt plate. Many years ago this type of stuff used to really confuse me too, but after nearly 30 years of very diligent study and research, very, very little confuses me today in regards to all those old Winchester firearms.

well there you Chip,[Bert,very good,didn't know that sorry for split'n extra hairs] Bert saved ya about $100 bucks. had mine letterd [the 92] before i sold it, had the Oct.brrl as i said before,but factory stated it was suppose to be round, still have the letter, would have given it the buyer, but i wanted more $$$ which he didn;t offer, . AFT good post, thats why we ask the Experts [:)]
