m1 garand
I just got a correct grade M1 from CMP. I don't know a whole lot about them, I field stripped it and cleaned it by using the instructions included. Everything looks great. I was wondering though, the instruction say I should have it looked over by an experienced gunsmith before firing. Is this just a c.y.a. statement, aren't these rifles headspaced and test fired? hey guys, help me out here, i have two local gunshops in town that are both selling springfield m1,s in 308, they both claim to only have one each, and both are unfired. one has a 1499.00 price tag, and the other has 1599.00 on it. since i am looking to buy one, i was wondering about the price. they say all parts are springfield except for the top over barrel, it seems to be a tan color plastic. any ideas on this being a good purchase for a shooter and future collectable? 0 -
LOOK CLOSE..if it is "blue sky imports" they imported a ton of M-1's of marginal condition and most with bad bores. They got used a LOT. Many are rebuilt many times or have assorted parts etc. 0 -
BE very careful of re-welds! I have seen two in the past 6 months that friends have purchased.
On the receiver looking down are what appear to be pox marks. Many times the cartridge doesn't feed properly as the receiver was not properly aligned prior to being re-welded.
Feed several clips through or take for a test fire - a rapid fire test fire of many clips.0 -
Generally an importers marking is the kiss of death for nearly any collectable firearm- unless it is REALLY rare. If this M1 were otherwise correct, and I mean the operating rod, stock- with correct markings, and every other part was right...well, it may be worth your time. I only say this because there is now something like a two year wait to get an International Harvester from the CMP.
What you need to think about is what Darrel said; the rifle could have seen tremendous use and the barrel may well be shot out. I'd have it checked with a bore errosion gauge before I did anything else-that is is if you are interested in firing it. If you just want it as a collectors rifle, then bore condition is of no concern, you want a correct barrel. That is all I look for.

also check the muzzel for damage from too much cleaning w/steel cleaning rods, many blue sky imports have no rifleing for the last inch. 0 -

I have a very nice Blue Sky Garand in vg condition overall w/all matching parts & numbers that I bought for $385.00 last year at my local gun shop. I have seen other Blue Sky Garands in similar condition averaging in the $450.00 range, one just last week.
Be patient and keep looking they are out there.

The import marking is so light that it cannot be read with reading glasses. I'll take a magnifying glass down to the shop and see if I can make it out. It may not be Blue Sky. 0 -
I heartily recommend that you listen carefully to what has been said by the above responders. They have no vested interest in your decision to purchase or not to purchase the Garand. They are only commenting upon the value of your purchase should you choose to do so. My only thought is to thoroughly check the entire rifle from the front sight to the butt plate. If you're not familiar with it, you really should find someone who is. These are going for such high prices right now, we tend to think that we are getting a bargain at $600. If it has mismatched or worn parts and has a shot-out barrel, you won't be happy with it as a shooter regardless of any consideration being given to it's potential collector value. A rough estimate of the bore's remaining life can be obtained with a round of .30-06 M2 ball ammo. Stick it nose first in the muzzle and roughly measure how much copper jacket shows. 1/4" of copper is close to new, 1/8" is well used but serviceable; if none of the copper shows, it is shot out.
By the way, the original stock will have a Defense Acceptance Seal (boxed eagle & stars) on the left side of the stock, and a 4 digit date code (& possibly 2 letters) stamped in the barrel channel.

1. the CMP considers LMR BBL`S to be better then national match or dutch "V" BBL`S. they had a small amount for sale and called them "TARGET GRADE". when in good condition with good(under 3) throat erosion ratings, and light muzzle wear(under 3) they are the most accurate, best made BBL`S you can find. the latest CMP/GARAND COLLECTORS ASSOSIATION newsletter gives the difinitive garand pricing guide. having an LMR BBL on you gun(especialy an IHC) adds cosiderably to the value.
if the LMR BBL is in great shape, has light muzzle wear and light throat erosion than buy it!!! you can get more for a top notch LMR BBL than the market value of the gun. condition is everything. check out the GARAND COLLECTORS ASSOSIATION web site, and the CMP web site. the LMR BBL`S sold out at an astonishing rate. know what you are looking for first. best regards, mike.
