I am thinking of trading my Remington 742 Woodmaster Semi-auto 30-06 for a Remington 721 Bolt Action, both are in great shape or should I keep looking?

I am new to hunting. I just started this year with a compound bow. I am looking at buying a 30-06 and am wondering if anyone knows any reliable models. I am not trying to spend a lot right now (over $400) but good to learn with. I saw a Mossbewrg and a Remington Model 700. Are these good? Thanks in advance. 0 -
You haven't given us much to go on, but I know you said there isn't much. Is it a bolt action? If so, it was very likely made by Fabrique National D'Armes de Guerre (FN) and is basically a Mauser action. FN makes high quality firearms, but I can't give you a value without knowing which model you have and it's condition. Firearms International was an importer that was taken over by the Garcia Corp. around 1970. 0 -
I agree with Hauptman G., your rifle was probably imported in the late 1960's by F.I., a well known importer of foreign firearms- and a supposed CIA run front for funneling guns to friendly governments (but that is another stroy). The firm hung on into the early 1970's but after 1970 I believe they imported only pistols and left the long guns to Garcia, who as Hauptman G stated, eventually took them over.
I have an old Garcia listing 1971 for an FN Mauser Supreme rifle- which is probably identical to your F.I. rifle- which was available in eight calibers, .30-06 included. Retail price in 1971 was $328 and included sights and sling swivels. The last listing I can find is from 1975 and by then the price had climbed to $470, due mostly to a very weak dollar in those days. I think at that time FN discontinued the Supreme model line and that was that. New in the box today I'd bet it would be worth around $600 to $700. Once they are fired value drops off quickly, but it is still a very fine rifle in a good caliber. For hunting I think you'd be hard pressed to do better for under $1000 today.

If the gun was imported by in the early 70's it was probably their standard FN action. This was a precursor to when Garcia Int'l bought out Firearms Int. and to their importation of the Sako line of firearms. Their plant was run from the mid 50's to mid 70's by Pete Dickey, who left to become Tech Ed for the NRA Mag after Beretta bought the plant in Accokeek, Md.
I bought 2 of these rifles from Pete in 30/06 caliber for friends in 1976 and paid about $200 each at that time. Both were good looking guns and utilitarian in nature, but, in no way would they fit in the same category as Brownings, Sako's, Rem's or Win's. They would probably be in the $350 - $550 range of value today.0
