Desert Eagles - Why not to buy
Off and on over the years I have had a bug to buy a Desert Eagle in .44 Mag. I have heard people here say some good things about the guns, but I am interested in the down side. If I am sinking close to $1,000 in a gun I want to know whats the worst thing that I can expect from the gun, like do they have maintenance problems.. I'm 200 pounds plus, so the recoil should not be an issue, and I have two 44 revolvers already. Any information is appreciated.

The only down side to them in my book is the price. They are a very high quality gun, but they are still overpriced in my eyes. Mine has given excellent service for many years and thousands of rounds. That being said, I don't throw it in the mud or wade through a river with it. I don't know how it would hold up in combat conditions.

the d.e. is a great weapon, i have yet to have problems with it, it is a pricy toy,although it is great for handgun hunting, in my eyes it is still just a toy.i love the attention i get at the range(44mg.)the only probs are that if you reload, you must crimp your loads, otherwise it will jam, and you must use a powerfull load (1300 fps+)in order to cycle the next round. lead bullets are a no-no, since it is gas operated, and the lead will gum up the works. it is extremely accurate with the standard sights if you stay vigalent, you can get a great price on one at gb. i bought a used one in like new condition, nickel plated, with gold accents for 750.00!!!! this is an unheard of price and it is very unlikey you will ever see one for that price, like i said stay vigalent.

If you are considering a Desert Eagle, why not go 'all the way', and get a 50AE?

one other thing i forgot to add, i would not pay more than 850.00 new, or 750.00 used for a standard d.e. some people will try to screw you by saying "new" de, when in fact it is older model, this can be indentified by the safety. if the safety is a flat triangular type lever it is one of the first models, and the chances of somone having it up to today, without firing it, are about as good as me being a viable candidate for the kkk (viva colombia!). if the lever protrudes outwards, than it is the newer model desert eagle.one such fellow who does this goes by "Qtygun", stay away from this crook.

I've owned 2 of them, the .44 and a .50ae and they've both worked pretty good although when I got them new out of the box (on both of them) they seriously needed loosened up a bit, they wouldn't work well at all until I had a smithy slick the slide action up a bit then they cycled with no problems what so ever for quite a number of rounds, never had a jam except once when I was running .44 spl by accident and it didn't quite cycle properly. I don't know if this was common from the factory or if I just got randomly selected by chance and fate to get these two. 0 -
Whenever I see one I think it must be the world's only crew served handgun. Way too big & heavy for any practicle purpose. 0 -
Agreed, they are definately not a piece designed to carry all day on your belt. Great for target shooting and braging, but too heavy for a carry gun for defensive purposes. 0 -

The only down side I am aware of is the price. I own four ,357,41 ,44 mags and a 50 AE. They can sometimes be a little finnicky about ammo. They, at least mine, perfer full power loads, light loads sometimes won't cycle the action fully. That said I have no problems with my Eagles. and the 50 caliber is a cannon, A real blast, forgive the pun, to shoot. Just clean them as you would any gun, and enjoy.0 -
