good shotgun for clays shooting

Hello recently I got interested in skeet and trap shooting (occasional Sunday fun) I was wondering if any one can give me advise on what shotgun should I look in to. So far I was using my brothers red label. Now I want my own. I was thinking of Beretta 390 or 391 but my budget is low (Christmas) what can I get in 500 to 850 price range. Also I got a Remington 870 Wingmaster from my father can I use it to shot clays and if yes how does it perform overall.

    I have had very good luck with the EAA Baikal shotguns with removable chokes. Plus, you'll still have money left over as I don't think any of them run over $500.

    I like the Rem 870 Wingmaster if Im going to shoot with a pump.The Rem 1100 for semi-auto but its a little pricey.Not as pricy as the Beretta.Good luck.

    I saw a nice Red Label in Peterson's Gun Shop in Mt. Dora, Florida for $875.00. A used regular Red Label, but looked new and had all the chokes. I'm sure you will find one near the high end of your price range if you look around. I think you will be happy with one. I am.

    IF the 870 fits you, than it will be fine. How well it works will depend on how well it fits you (this is true of all shotguns). The 870 is a good, reliable, entry level clays gun. If it's a fixed choke gun, you might have to get a different barrel (in the begining I would suggest a modified barrel with #7 1/2 or #8 shot for trap and sporting clays, and a Imp. Cyl. with #9 shot for skeet).
    While a single shot is all you need for trap, the ability to get off a second round quickly is required for skeet and sporting clays. None of the clay games allow more than 2 shells in the gun at one time, and only load your gun when your on the shooting pad.
    Many clay ranges limit you to 1 1/8oz 3dram loads and #7 1/2, #8 and #9 for shot sizes.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    The 870 you have would be OK for trap (single shot) but I have not seen very many people who are proficient with a pump shotgun when it comes to a quick follow-up shot. (skeet, doubles, or sporting clays) Remington 1100 or 1187 should fall within your price range. The 1100 has been around forever. (almost) If you do find a Remington, you might want to see how much a seal kit is for one. That is about the only thing I have heard of that goes wrong with them, due to not cleaning it. (there is always the exception to that of course) Did you like using the Red Label? That or a Browning O/U would also make a fine choice, if you could find one for the right price. What ever you get, have fun shooting.

    The Ithaca FWT with vent rib is one smooth, fast and light shotgun. You can easily get off two or three shots on a double. They have an additional 1/2" drop at the heel over my 1100s which works better for me. Used Vent Rib Ithacas are a great value at about $200.
    Before spending a dime on another gun try to determine which fit you in drop at the heel,comb and cast or you wont hit birds. When you snap the gun to your shoulder, if you have to duck your head down or force it into the stock to line up, the stock doesn't fit you.
    Because of their great reputation,I thought I needed a Red Label but found they dont fit me and are a little heavy. The Beretta 20 gauge overunder on the other hand is lighter, has a 3 1/2" drop and is faster handling.
    If there's a shotgun you have to have no matter what, you can always spend the bucks to have the stock bent to fit you and make it work.

    Merek13, you should have no problem in finding a used 390 in the price range stated. The 390 is a little heaver and beefier than the 391 which is perfered by some sporting clays and most trap shooters. Both are excellent guns. As mentioned, the 870 will work for trap but given time, you will want a semi-auto or O/U for skeet. The Rem. 1100 are also excellent for skeet and very good condition 1100's can be found for ~$325-400. You may find one for less with a fixed choke and buy a used Rem choke barrel for ~$100.

    You're 870 will do fine for clays. It is seen a lot at sporting clay shoots. Stack barrels like the red label, citori, onyx, Superposed,when you can find them, make excellent clay guns. You might check the auction board here. There a lot of fine shotguns posted. The biggest thing is to make sure the gun fits you and have fun. Don't over look pumps and semi-autos for clay, An 1100, 11-87 or Browning are also good choices.

    I LIVE IN OREGON AND THE PEOPLE AT OUR TRAP RANGE ARE FRIENDLY AND WILL LET NEW PEOPLE TRY THEIR GUNS,THAT IS THE BEST WAY TO FIND OUT IF A CERTAIN GUN WILL WORK OR NOT, I LEARNED THAT THE EXPENCIVE WAY I BOUGHT A 1100 REMINGTON TRAP GUN, AND IT KICKED THE **** OUT OF ME AND I COULDN'T HIT NOTHING, 2 ROUNDS AND MY SHOULDER WAS BLACK AND BLUE. A SHOT GUN HAS TO FIT OR IT WIL HURT YOU, gOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN.

    Trap, Sporting Clay, and Skeet are as differant as night and day. If you are just starting out, find a gun that fits. When you get further into the sport you may find that a long (32"-34"), single shot, full choke heavy gun works well for trap, and a shorter (26"-28") over under with cylinder choke works well for skeet. Sporting Clays is in between those two.
