HK MP5 BBL question
I am in the process of making a SBR,I have a bbl made by Top Notch Accessories,I was wondering if any of you folks out there had one of these bbl's installed on your guns? I was told by someone who does conversions that all the US made bbls are garbage!! some type of problem with headspacing? Has any one had this problem? I have yet to install bbl and I was wondering if this would be worth it or should i have my original bbl cut down? I read in a old post about Urbach 3 lug install? can anyone explain to me how this works? Thanks for the info

One fast question first: Are you taking an existing HK-94 and converting it to a short barreled rifle? If so I cannot see any advantage to removing the old barrel and installing a new one. It would be a MUCH simpler process to just have the existing barrel cut down to the desired length and then re-crowned. The process of removing a barrel from an HK receiver and then installing a new one is a rather complex afair- they don't just pop in and out or screw in to the upper like an M16 barrel.
Also keep in mind that an SBR is not exempt from the 1994 ban on semi automatic assault weapons. You cannot add a flash suppressor or thread the barrel. To do either of these you would have to install a registered sear and convert you rifle into a machinegun, since they are exempted from the crime bill provisions on AW's. The three lug modification to your barrel is a fine way to go, but since you won't be able to put a flash hider onto the barrel anyway, it may be a waste of time. By the way, have you filed your ATF Form 1 yet? DON"T DO ANYTHING to that barrel until you have your canceled NFA $200 Tax Stamp in your posession.

Form 1 is approved and on hand,I have a Smith to do the work but not sure on which way to go.Gun is IG date coded which is 1986 manufacture so pre crime bill and I believe installing flash suppressor would be ok?

pappy, I did not mean to doubt you for a second. There are a large number if new HK "type" receivers floating around and thought you might be using one of these for you SBR. I can't comment on Top Notch barrels, but the notion that all US made barrels are "garbage"
is non sense. I would still go with shortening the existing barrel, as it saves all kinds of 'smithing- unless of course you Top Notch unit offers something superior to the factory barrel.
I am a Colt LE dealer and have been out of the HK end of the business for several years now. The best three lug set ups I remember seeing were done by S&H Arms in Owasso, Oklahoma. The work was done by Curtis Higgins and I always felt it was all top notch. I have no idea if the firm is still in Oklahoma. Old phone number was 918-272-9894.
