Yugo sks's any good?
One of my local dealers has unissued Yugo SKS's for 180.00 would it be worth having or are they???? I'm kinda guessing you get what you pay for but in the PRK I'm kinda surprised Dianstien hasn't had a tizzy.

The Yugoslavian SKS is as good as any of this type. They are comparable to the Soviet Rifle. One suggestion, As with any SKS,I always suggest buying the screw barreled version, You can tell them by the bell shaped flare at the reciever end of the barrel, it will also have two flats for a barrel wrench.
The pinned barrel, on any SKS, came over time loosen, adversely affecting accuracy. The Yugoslavian version it a little less well finished than others,but where it counts the fit and finish is more than adaquete. They, like all SKS veriants are Rugged, dependable rifles. Probably why they are still in service all over the world. They are a lot of gun for the money.0 -

An SKS is pretty much an SKS reguardless of who makes it for the most part. You'll see minor variances between mfg's but for the most part a soviet sks is pretty much the same as a yugo, romanian, ect.... 0 -
A student brought to a class a NEW or like new Yugo SKS. What a joy to look at. Wood was up to par with any commercial U.S. rifle. The bluing was top quality well polished and it looked like it came out of Ruger or Remington and cost someone $500 or more. Without question the finest example of an SKS I have seen and I thought the Russians were pretty nice. Buy the best condition one you can. I saw about a dozen of the lower grade guns who still showed top workmanship, and oddly each had various initials and other items carved into the wood. Must have been the thing to do when they were issued. 0 -

What, pray tell, am I wrong about. I have been a gunsmith for 30 years, and have worked on and probabely own every variant of the SKS, Russian, cech, Yugo, Romainian,etc. I also had plenty of experience with them in Vietnem. These are rugged dependable rifles, comparable on this basis with any service rifle in the world. I used them while in country, they did'nt jam like the M-16-A1 wonder rifle I was issued, nor did the AK-47. My respect for these rifle came in combat NOT from a rifle range.0 -

Like the other posters said, you really can't go too wrong
at that price.
A few years ago, I bought a tricked-out SKS that ranked
quite high in the visual intimidation department...fiberglass camo stock,
black rubber recoil pad (like it needed one!) metal ventilated
handguard, compensator (which the previous owner never properly pinned) and topped with a Burris telescope and mounts that
probably cost more than the rifle itself. I added a larger capacity magazine simply as frosting on the cake.
This little sucker would spit out rounds as fast as I could squeeze
the trigger.
It simply would not jam!
This was the el-cheapo Chinese variation.
Accuracy was a different story.
Basically, I had an awesome noisemaker.
But it was probably MY fault for not taking the time to sort out
the problem (see previous responses)
I eventually sold it.
Kinda miss it, though, and would not hesitate to buy a nicer
variation if the price was right.0 -
Python I have to agree with you. The sks is a pretty dependable rifle. Not so hot looking but there are after market accessories you can dress it up with. If 101 doesn't agree maybe he could tell us why not just say you were wrong. I could say anybody is wrong but unless I give my reason it doesn't mean a hill of beans. 0 -
only prob i see with the yugo is the lack of chrome-lined barrel.
other than that, you generally get what you pay for(as in most things).
thats why i have to get INSIDE the barn to hit it.[:p]

I've found most sks's to be highly accurate. I have a chinese norinco that shoots just fine. I put a fixed 20rd box on it and have a blast. If you want a good, accurate, & cheap to shoot plinker, I'd highly recommend the sks.
One other recommendation, if you do buy the sks you may want to get a rubber slip on recoil pad. Not that these rifles have any recoil, but to add to length of pull. Most of these sks stocks are really short. Funny story, I was in a gunshop in Delevan Wiscosin looking for a recoil pad for my sks. Shop owner looks at me, tells me "You don't need a recoil pad to lengthan that stock, You need a couple chinamen between you and that rifle!" [}:)]
I think it had something to do with the fact that I'm 6'4!

I've got several of these little rascals (SKSes)and I really admire their reliability. Their mechanical design relects real genius. As hinted at by faldum (above) accuracy seems to be a mixed bag. I've got a new Chinese reissue with a perfect chrome lined barrel that never jams, but has trouble consistently hitting a medium-sized cardboard box at 50 yards! I'm talking about a 2'x2' box! I ordered two of the Yugos when they first swam ashore and received two in right around excellent exterior condition, but not so good bores. Both had been fired extensively with corrosive ammo, and had been cleaned, but nevertheless showed the effects. I gave the better one to my buddy and the one I kept appears to be almost a smooth bore with lots of minute pitting which is shiney. I have yet to fire it as it is disheartening to look at, but it may surprise me. I have every intention of obtaining one of the advertised unissued specimens. I did obtain 300 rds. of Winchester-made brass and Rem. bullets and intend to see if the Chinese model won't respond to handloads. I also have an as-new Russian. Far superior in fit and finish to all others I've seen. I would think that with the abundance of non-corrosive ammo now available the SKS should march on for years to come. 0
