colt ar-15 pre-ban??
i have recently purchased a colt ar-15 h-bar that i was told was a post ban gun..after showing it to my friend and then looking up the serial # which is MH039*** it says its a preban gun..the gun has a flash hider on it but no bayonet lug..is this a pre-ban and if so can i install pre-ban uppers on the gun?? thanks for any of your help....tom

From this I would assume your's is pre-ban, unless it was sold as a bare receiver and finished after the ban. In the condition you describe, having bought it with a flash hider (real flash hider, not a fake one) and with the pistol grip would be enough to put it in the assault weapons category without the bayonet lug. Since it is already an assault weapon, you can add a bayonet lug, collapsable stock, and such as you want, as long as it's legal in your state or city.

Colt took the bayo lug off because Colt is a politically correct gun company worried about legal liability. Hence its "blocked" lower receiver and decision to remove the bayo lug from its civilian models. Also, Colt was, until its new chief of operations decided to bring the* company closer to mil-spec on new manufacture, just plain weird in its manufacturing decisions (i.e., slab-sided lowers, large screw rather than small push pin, flattop height variances, etc.).
