question about Saiga .308

I have several Saiga and Mak 90 pistol-grip 7.62 X 39 rifles that work well. I am considering trading one in and replacing it with a .308 caliber Saiga (no pistol grip) or similar rifle. I don't know why really, only that I've heard the .308 round is more powerful and while I do not hunt now maybe someday I'll need to hunt. Is there any real advantage in the .308 caliber over the 7.62 X 39 mm caliber (especially as it pertains to plunking, self defense and hunting)??. As always, thanks for any input.

    the .308 is superior to the 7.62x39 in many ways, the .308 probably has twice the range {if not more} than the x39,effective hunting range .308=+- 300yds or so, while the x39 should not be used out past 150yds max, these are just my opinions, but most will agree.

    HeavyBarrel is right, the .308 is far superior to the 7.62x39 in range, trajectory, energy, accuracy, and load selection. THe .308 is much better for hunting since it can be used for large game like elk and similar game, while the 7.62x39, in my opinion, should only be used for game up to the size of deer. Good luck!

    The Saiga .308 is a very good rifle. while the .308 is a more excepted hunting round, the 7.62x39 also works well with the right loading. The .308 will always out perform the x39, with more than twice the case volume, this is a given. You should be happy with any of these type rifles, my personal favorite is the FN-FAL. By the way, the effective range for the 7/62x39 is 400 meters.

    OK, I appreciate the input and information. I think I'm getting a .308 but I have one more question. The ones I'm looking at by Saiga are low cost (that is important to me) and are sold with either a 16 inch or 22 inch barrel. Other than accuracy, is there any significant diference in the barrel lengths when shooting a .308? Is the 16 inch barrel going to have significantly more felt recoil than the 22 inch barrel?? Thanks for any help.

    This, in answer to your next question (I agree with everyone else)--you would definately be better off with a 22 inch barrel as opposed to a 16 inch for a .308. The extra length will help the .308 realize it's superior ballistic potential, and you will find 22-24 inches to be the standard for most sporting rifles in this caliber.

    Their isnt much to compare the .308 is a much more powerful round than the 7.62x39.
