GARAND TRIGGER GP ASSEMBLY
Is it possible to remove and replace the trigger GUARD on the M1 Garand trigger group without complete disassembly of the group? The instructions I have show the trigger guard as the last part removed. Just looking at the trigger group,seems as if you could drift the pin [hammer+trigger guard] out while holding other parts steady..Drop trigger guard down and replace with new guard ...then replace pin ??? Seems too easy so I will not even think about doing it until someone sets me straight

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! The trigger gaurd does not simply drop out of the trigger group; it instead sort of rolls out to the right and only after the other components are removed first. The hammer MUST BE DECOCKED before you push out the trigger pin. Once the trigger and hammer plungers are removed you can punch out the hammer pin and remove the hammer. Once the hammer is out of the way it may be POSSIBLE to remove the trigger gaurd without removing the safety- but it is MUCH EASIER to get the safety out of the way as well. Once the safety is gone, pull the trigger gaurd back and out of the housing by pulling it down and then rotating it to the right. It all sounds more complicated than it really is. There is no way to get the gaurd out without diasassembly of the trigger group- unless one of our veterans knows a GI short cut that I've never heard of.

Of the thousands of combat theater M-1 rifles I've repaired and inspected, I don't recall ever having to replace a triggerguard. Nothing in the M-1 trigger group seemed to get out of order even under severe conditions.
In recognition of its' good design, Kalashnikov copied the sear and disconnector mechanism for his AK47.0
