Ruger P-90 ???

Please some comments on the dependability/quality of the Ruger P-90.
I'm set on the 45acp, just yours views on the quality of the weapon.

    Hey,
    As far as quality of Ruger, I would say good. I must ask, have you ever shot a Glock? Personally, I recommend Glock for any personal defense gun. I don't know if you've tried them or not, you may not like them if you have. However, if you haven't shot one yet, do it, because you will fall in love with it. It's high quality, high reliability, and relatively low price. I don't know what size you're looking at, but the 36 is an awesome gun. Check it out. If you're set on Ruger, it's a fine gun, don't get me wrong.

    I have tried both Ruger 45s,P90 and P97.The P90 is a robust and well made double action alloy framed single stack mag semi auto.The P97 is a polymer framed double action also with somewhat cleaner lines.

    I ended up getting a Ruger P95 9mm because I was shopping for another 9.I own several Ruger products and they are all well enginered and function flawlessly.CW

    I own a Ruger KP90. The only thing that I did was to add Hogue rubber grips and have the trigger smoothed just a bit. Both of these were very optional. It was fine just out of the box and modified it after about 3 years. I have fired dang near every type of ammo through it and with the exception of UMC it fired with out a hitch. UMC jammed every 3 or 4 rounds. It is a full size gun, though. And for someone medium sized like me, it is hard to conceal. If I was in the market again, I would definately look at the P97. I also own a P95 and the only thing about the Polymer series is that you would have to add the Houge slip-on grip instead of replacing the grip panels like the P90. It makes the grip just a little thicker.

    I bought a KP-90 D over a year ago. Functions flawlessly and has cycled every type of ammo I have run through it, including Blaser and reloads at the range. It is much more accurate than I anticipated and much more experienced marksmen have commented that it shoots well. I think it is one of the great values in a .45.

    Worry is the interest humans pay on the debt of miscalculation.

    My p90 that came with the hogue grips. It has NEVER malfunctioned in any way, and it is the only handgun i have i would ever trust my life to, excpet for my brand new glock 36 which so far has proved just as reliable. Mine ruger is accurate too, and the only druther in my opinion is its size, which is why i had to get the glock for concealed carry. Otherwise, its just like the others said, top of the line.     you are right, rugers are not top of the line, my wording was incorrect. what i meant was the p90 is a top-value so to speak among handguns. i dont understand why you dont think the rugers are good for protection and/or L.E. Could you please elaborate as ive never heard bad about them and with writers like Massad Ayoob carrying them daily, and some departments ive read about issuing them i cant see why they would not be suitable? thanks

    Its built like a Tank,very reliable and a pleasure to shoot,even those 230gr RDS.It should last a lifetime.

    They are very well built, I have found them to be very reliable, sufficiently accurate and decent looking. It isn't a 1911 (or a Glock), but then again what is[^]

    a ruger isnt combat worthy? why, because it doesnt cost $600? because you dont see them in movies as much as the others? dano, name one thing a sig, hk, or beretta will do that my ruger p97 wont do..( helpful hint, it will have to be something other than go bang EVERY time, is accurate, has a good trigger, and will last 3 lifetimes because this 97 does all these) several local L E agencies here in nebraska use the ruger products and like them. i think the wisconsin state police use the ruger, holler if i;m wrong, mas ayoob;s dept, etc, etc...rattles when you shake it?..mine doesnt and even if it did slide fit has nothing to do with accuracy on these. the barrel locks up against the cam block at the moment of let off. many a 1911 rattles too. are they not combat worthy?

    Nebrguy, A lot of Ruger's do rattle when you shake them. If you look at my earlier post where I said "sufficiently accurate" that is why I said that. A lot of Ruger pistol get loose, especially after some use. I think it probably stems from a fit/geometry issue. They are sturdy, but the fit affects the accuracy and also on some, the reliability (not wanting to go into battery, failure to feed, or quite commonly failure to eject). If you have a lot of lateral play, the ejector claw might not properly hold, guide, and eject the spent casing and the gun jams up on the brass. I may be wrong but I am betting that the PD's dropped the Ruger for these reasons amongst others. If you check a PD trade-in Ruger they have been well broken-in. The newer series seem to perform better but I haven't quite gotten used to the looks of them. I wish they'd texture the Zytel frame so it didn't look like a squirt gun.[^]

    kingjoey, i would love to call your wager on agencies dropping the ruger because of reliability issues. talk to gun rental joints, range masters, police depts., and ask them how many problems the rugers have in relation to other makes. one local agency dropped the p85's due to the .40 craze. at that time ruger had not come out with the p91 yet. squit gun?..i guess function and results have always overshadowed beauty for me. to each their own. glocks are great handguns as well, but personally i think they look like a creation made up of legos. good shootin

    dano its true enough the ar15 isnt a mini..the mini's work every time..anyway, i didnt catch in your oratory that 1 thing the high priced models do that my p97 wont. and ruger uses inferior materials now? their R & D is shadowed by other makes? to give your statements some inkling of credibility, name 1 factual instance of a ruger product that let an officer down. please include the dept, officer involved and date.

    Nebrguy, calm down a little. No one is saying that the Ruger is a POS. Departments have considerations they have to account for and that will cause the rise and fall of several diffent pistols for police use. As far as the squirt gun remark, I was just saying that I don't like the glossy plasticy look the Ruger frames have. They did great anodizing on the alloy frame guns which preceded the polys, but the look and feel of those is too smooth. I like a slide that is dehorned and feels like a bar of soap, but the frame Ilike to be able to hold on to. Don't get offended, I own a few Rugers myself, it just wouldn't be my primary choice for a duty or carry application. They're great shooters, but in police use, they are probably going to opt for something that goes bang 99.99% of the time rather than 99.90% as long as they can afford it. Just my 2 cents.[;)]
