got my answer, thank you
I would like to ID this barrel: It is marked: Remington Arms Co., Inc., ILION, N.Y., MADE IN USA PATENTS 1,763,655-1,763,714-1,786,213-1,834,410-2,023,929-2.039,814 / 12 GA 2 3/4 or shorter / full / CTT3 / 98051 / there is what looks like an "XSS" next to a proofmark and "REP" or "RER" in an oval. If anyone can figure out what gun this fits, I would be grateful [but don't sweat it too much, there's a gun show next month I can take it to].

Thank you, Captain K. The Remington site itself was not helpful but I did find an email address for a dealer in obsolete barrels.

Mr. OReilly,
The xss is a date code meaning December 1946. The 1946 Gun Digest lists two Remington repeating shotguns available in 1946. They are the pump action model 31 and the semi auto model 11. The pump bbl will have a lug on the bottom of the barrel with an indention into which a stud fits to lock it in place. The model 11 barrel will have ring on the bottom of the barrel that fits over the magazine tube. The ring will have a beveled inside edge on the back side. Does the barrel fit either of these descriptions? I suspect that the 98051 is the shotguns serial number. That should fit into the model 31 serial number range as approx 131000 of this model were made between 1931 and 1949. Do a search on the internet gun auctions for model 31 Remington. You might find a good picture that could confirm what it is.0 -
Many thanks, Herschel. It appears to be the Model 31. I have an uncle who occasionally cleans out his gun room and gives me stuff he doesn't want/need anymore but he didn't remember what model this barrel came from.
