In the string on steel core ammo it was stated that someone offers a pistol in this caliber. It was my understanding that T/C made contender barrel, but did someone else produce a handgun? I rather thought that the ATF stopped the cheap chinese steel core ammo just because it was cheap and used the "armor piercing pistol ammo" argument as an excuse.

    The only requirement that is somewhat challenging for a legal handgun that happens to shoot rifle ammo is that it must still come in under 50 oz., unloaded. Since the Carbon-15 and the OA-98 solved the weight problem in two different ways (one with more polymers and the other by using aluminum forgings and relieving non-critical areas) a "large handgun" such as you describe is very possible. In fact, I thought I saw one the other day but haven't been back to research it yet.

    By the way, the Krinkov, which some would call an assault pistol, is available in 7.62x39 chambering as well as the 5.45; I've seen them with welded fixed mags on the auction sites in 7.62, and Urban Armory has them with the stick mags at outrageous prices (It's a $400 gun, max, in reasonable terms) but I'm not sure if they have a 7.62. I'm also not sure how they're dealing with the barrel length issue legally on that one.

    I remember seeing a semi-auto handgun in one of the gun magazines. I'll see if I can find it.

    Olympic arms made a PROTO-type for the Shot Show and BATF said that was enough to make it a handgun round. I don't believe one was ever sold to the public. Total silliness, but that never stopped them before.

    Professional Ordnance, maker of the Carbon 15, has been saying they were coming out with a 7.62 version of the Carbon 15 pistol, but I haven't seen any available yet.

    As far as I know Thompson never made a 7.62X39 barrel in the Contender .They did (or do) however make one in the Encore.

    Russians made few pistols in 7.62x25mm.

    Olympic did make less than a dozen of the OA93's in 7.62x39. The people that made the Lone Eagle for Magnum Research also had some leave the factory unauthorized in 7.62. There have been some of the B-west AK pistols in 7.62, years ago. Professional Ordnance is supposed to be having some of theirs out soon. There has been 7.62 pistol uppers made for the AR's. So yes, there have been a number of handguns done in 7.62x39. It was Olympic's OA 93 that caused the 7.62x39 steel core to be reclassified back in 1994. Prior to that, it was know in the industry that if someone did make a pistol in 7.62x39, that they would screw up the availablity of cheap surplus steel core 7.62x39. So no one would make one. Then Olympic stepped on it and screwed it up for everyone.

    I asked H&R about a barrel for one of their single shots and was told that the pressures were too variable in the 7.62x39 and they wouldn't accept liability. You would think that anything that would handle .270 Win (55000 cup) would handle a round that old ramshackle SKS spit out semiauto.

    Thompson Center made a barrel in 7.62x39 for the Encore. I do not know if the are still produced.

    Much obliged to all who have commented (even the gentleman who apparently didn't understand the question.)

    The thing that just keeps bugging me is this, what part of "shall not be infringed" does our current government not understand? The common wisdom I had kept hearing was that no pistols in this caliber were ever marketed and that the production of prototypes was the excuse the ATF used to stop importation of the cheap ammo.
