Stock cleaning ? Vs. Stripping

I want to clean an old Eddystone P17 rifle stock but I do not want to strip it chemically. I am interested in stripping old dirts and grim without damages cartouches etc........
Water base ideas or other options

  You'll get lots of recipes.
  
  For dirt & grime, I prefer washing in hot water with Simple Green or some other detergent; scrub with a nylon pad or 0000 steel/brass wool. Some folks use oven cleaner, but I think that is too harsh. If there is still grease, after it is dry I rub with acetone; if it is saturated with grease, I use the sit-on-a-hot-dashboard-in-the-sun method to bring the grease to the surface, then wipe with acetone.
  
  After cleaning, rub with oil since the detergent/solvent will have dried out the wood. Between coats, rub with 0000 steel/brass wool (avoid the cartouches). Never ever use sandpaper.

  I'll go with nmyers. Might consider alcohol if easier to get than acetone.

  Hope you are still looking at this THANKS ... What kind of oil Lineseed , Tungoil ?

  If you choose to use linseed oil,make sure you use "boiled" linseed oil. The difference between boiled and raw linseed oil is in drying time. Raw linseed oil will remain tacky for some time, boiled will not. Both tung and linseed can produce a beautiful finish, which you choose is personal preference
