OK...I'm Cheap....Shotgun barrel
I want to buy a Remington 870 to build as a home defence weapon.
If I find one cheap would it matter if I cut the barrel down to 20" instead of buying one that is 20"?
With no rifling I can't see were it would matter. I would then extend the mag out to the end of the barrel. It would hold 8 rounds I believe.

Ruger, are you buying a new or used 870? Not that it matters to your question. But no point in buying a new gun, there are so many 870's around.
I did the same thing, bought a used 870, put on the mag tube extesion, a side sadle shell carier, a but cuff shell carrier, & a bandoleer sling. I figured it out that I had a 27rd capacity unloaded (on the outside of the gun) & a 34rd capacity loaded! [:D]
Took it to the range and found that bandoleer sling to be useless. The recoil from the dbl ought buck nocked those shells right out of the bandoleer. Then I realized that the sling clamp that came with the mag extesion really needs to be locktighted on after that flew off!
Let me say though, it's good to field test everything!
My gun's capacity is now down to 12 on the oustide & 7 inside.

I understand that half the fun can be doing it yourself. On the other hand if you want to avoid the hassle I might suggest the Remington 870 Marine Magnum, which out of the box seems to meet most of your requirements. Works for me and is good around saltwater. And, for a stock factory shotgun, has a nice intimidating look about it.

Hello RugerNiner, the longest mag. extention possible, that I know of, requires a 26 inch barrel. One of my 870s has one and it adds a little weight to the front end that helps with muzzle flip but it makes it a bit harder to swing around. Check out the Tac Star website, they should have everything you need, or the Wilson Combat site too. Might I suggest the high visibility follower as well, they are really nice. Also the jumbo head safety. The short stock might be better too, makes it easier to move around.

This gun would be for inside the house only, except if I had to go out the door slightly. This would be perfect if I thought I could get away with not paying the stupid $200. Also I would be using light loads in it, maybe even those aguileras.

If you get a 870 that is not very old you will have to debur the inside of the magazine or else your shells will not travel into the extention. The stops for the plug and spring protrude into the mag. to act as a stop for the plug. These also would keep the new spring and plug from traveling into the new extention. 0 -

Queeksdraw is refering to the Remington "Expess" model with the magazine indentation. All other 870s do not have the indentation and can take the extended magazine without any problems. You can use a magazine mandrel to force out the indentation in the express models too, not a big deal. Some people use the standard spring in the extended mag, don't do this. You save a few bucks at the expense of reliability. Also, don't use the Aguilerias (sp?). Reliability again is poor. Stick with buckshot or large shot sizes for home defence, they won't go through to many walls and the recoil isn't bad at all. I would also recommend not going with a folding stock. They are not that great when used as a stock and they are in the way when folded. Seriously, the "keep it simple" principle works well with a home defence shotgun. Short barrel 870 with a good cartridge carrier like a side saddle or a elastic butstock holder is all you really need. More than enough to keep anybody out of your house. 0 -
GHS you are 100% correct it is an express I have not looked at it since I did what Ruger wants to do. I put it together loaded it with buckshot and put it in its holder on the back of the safe room door I have not needed it yet so I dont see it much. Sorry about the confusion. 0 -

I have used the Remington top folder, Choate stock w/pistol grip,
Speed-Feed synthetic(standard w/o the spare ammo slot), and the factory wood stock. If it has to have a pistol grip, get the Choate. Otherwise, I would suggest leave the wood stock on it, or get a synthetic, standard type, stock and forend.
Buy a used 870, or if you can't find one Academy Sports runs the Express for $199, for your project. I would also recommend the large head safety. If this is a house gun only, you wont need a sling. If
you leave the wood stock on, add a recoil pad if it does not have one (easier on the shoulder, and wont slide when stood up against the wall). Also, if you stand it against the wall use an old sock on the muzzle end, folded double. It wont scratch the wall then.
