What rifle uses a .243??
I talked to some lady deer hunters tonight who said they like to use a
.243 caliber when hunting deer. The one lady said it is used in military rifles a lot. I was in the Army & Vietnam and I've heard of the M-1, the M-14 and the M-16 but never the .243. Does anyone
know what type bullet this is compared to a 30.30 and what military rifle uses it? Thanks.

The .243 was introduced by Winchester in the mid 1950's as a sporting cartridge. It is bascically a .308 cartridge necked down to accept a 6mm bullet. the .243 was never adopted for use with any military forces that I have ever heard of and certainly not by our own armed forces. It is strcictly a sporting round...and a darn good one for deer hunting.
There were however a number of commercial firms who manufactured their own copies of the M1 Garand and M14 service rifles in the .243 caliber. One that comes quickly to mind is the Springfield Armory M1A, which used to be chambered for the .243 but was discontinued in tthat caliber some years ago. Since the .243 is based on the .308, this was a very easy adaption for the rifle.

Armalite chambers the AR15 in .243 and .223/.308. That might be how they thought it was a military round.

OK, I am now somewhat literate in what a .243 cartride is.
Before those ladies mentioned it I never heard of it.

X-Racer, I will seldom argue with a man who has been around firearms and knows firearms history like yourself,(and is SO MUCH OLDER than I am), but wasn't the 6mm Lee Navy given the inch designation .236 Navy by our turn of the century military? I am pretty sure I am right but I will check a few reference works...unless of course Iconoclast is out there somewhere. Teak, where are you when we need you?

BTW, the bullet diameter of the 6mm Lee Navy was .244.
