What do you guys/gals have to say about the quality/value of a Lee Pro 1000 Progressive Reloading Press. Is Lee good for customer service, reliability, ease of use? Is it a "true" progressive press? Good for a newbie? Thanks.

    I have one in 9mm that I have stopped using. It is unreliable. It has a chain that operates the powder feed that broke repeatately. I had primer feed problems often. I would not recommend it to anyone. If I buy another progressive, it will be a Dillon. Everyone I know that has them has had good luck. This is the only Lee product that I ever bought that has been bad. It is cheaply made. I started out loading 40 years ago with the old style Lee loader that you beat with a hammer. I was a whole lot happier with it.

    I dont have any personal experience with it but I have heard a lot af bad thing. I have always used RCBS and have been happy with them, But that is my personal opinion.

    I know three people who bought these Lee progressives and not one has been satisfied with its performance. Pearyw's comment about the chain operated powder drop is on the money- it will surely break. The primer feed is a very cheap set up and never seems to feed correctly as the feed track is fully exposed and relies on gravity. The spent primers simply drop under the machine and there is no way to empty them out unless you unbolt the entire unit and the sweep them away or drill a hole under the base and let them fall on the floor. The automatic case feeder is a series of long plastic tubes that are a nightmare to adjust and tend to feed the cases upside down as often as right side up. Switching from large to small primers or just changing feed plates for a caliber change is a time consuming process.

    These three guys are all friends of mine but I at last put my foot down and told them that I would not work on any of their machines anymore as they are just too trouble prone. One of these guys also owns a Universal M1 Carbine and I told him the same thing about his rifle! If you need a progressive press just bite the bullet and buy a Dillion. I have a 650 and it is faultless in my opinion.

    For a progressive, or semi-progressive, buy a Dillon. Their customer service is second to none! I bought a 550 from a friend that quit reloading, plus all of his dies, etc. I called Dillon with a couple of questions and mentioned that there were 2 cans of case lube that would not spray. The guy sent 2 new cans!!!

    I have a friend with a Lee and he says it's got some foibles. I've never been impressed with Lee, but most people buy their stuff thinking they'll save some bucks which really depends on which item and their use of it.

    i can say anything about a dillon, but it seems they are great by the way people describe them. as a student i cannot afford to spend that kind of money on a press, so i bought the pro 1000, yes it can be a pain in the arse, but if you give it your full attention, it can operate without fault, i have not had the chain break on me yet, the primer feed is a pain, but considering that most dillon presses cost almost three times as much as the lee pro 1000, i can learn to live with the faults. it is not the best press, but it is not as bad as it's been described.

    Her's a pretty good indicator....
    there are lots of used lee presses on the various "net auctions,almost no used dillons.I love my blue machine too.
    If I HAD to buy Lee because of price I'd consider their turret press.Not as many moving parts to have to keep an eye on,and it's faster than ,say,their challenger model.
