Savage 1899/99's

I am just beginning to collect Savage 1899s/99s (.250-3000, .303 takedowns, and a 300 rigid frame. I am interested in knowing if (on the take-down models, if other caliber barrels can be installed if they too are for a takedown model gun? If I ever find a .410 internchange-able barrel for either takedown gun (.250 or .303) I will surely want it. Will any Savage taledwon .410 barrel fit either one of these two guns? I will also be interested in putting on a replacement forearm and possibly a stock on the .303 takedown, since a recoil pad has been installed on the original. Are replacement stocks and forearms available, or will I need to have these pieces custom made (ugh)?

I also have a .300 Savage made in 1948. It appears to have an original redfield peep sight,with no open rear sight. There is a blank in the rear sight groove, and appears to have been instlled at the factory or maybe by a very competent gunsmith because it is very difficult to see it just in front of the breech. Also, a brass (larger) front sight appears to have been added, with some sort of leading to anchor the front sight in place. Is this a normal process and will it be difficult to replace it with an original sight, and what should I be looking for?

    I have a Savage take down in caliber .303 Savage which also has a .38-55 barrel and a .410 bore shot gun barrel. The three barrels, the receiver with the butt stock attached and the forearm are all in a leather case which has a blue lineing and the Savage Indian head on it in gold. This set was made about 1929. So,I would think that any take down barrel could be fitted to any take down action. For stocks check Boyds Gunstocks at www.boydboys.com. Just remember that if you replace a major part like the stock,you have lost all the collector value of the rifle and the rifle will then sell just as a used gun.

    Thansk for your help. I may just have the after-market recoil pad replaced by a pro and the slight crack in the forend also glued.

    Your set sounds like what I really wanted. Are you interested in parting with it?

    http://www.savage99.com/ is a website you will find interesting. There is a book by Douglas Murray called "The Ninety-Nine" that tells entire history and all the models. There is one for sale on gunbroker right now: 8928775 . Incidentally the 1899/99s have matching serial numbers on the buttplates and in the butt of the stock. Its one of the criteria for collectibity. There great guns.Way ahead of their time when invented. Affordably collectible and accurate too. I have 3 and love em.

    Dave, you can offer to buy on the wanted board but no buying or selling here on the experts board. If you are collecting, try to purchase rifles that are stock, with changes post factory. Recoil pads, scope mount holes and so on added after the rifle left the factory seriously impact the value, and essentially render the rifle a shooter not a collectible. Things done very well and long ago may be over looked to some degree, but not major changes. 99's have suddently become collectable and you will find prices increasing sharply. At the Tulsa show beaters were asking $695 and they went up to over $3K! Good luck!
