Looking to buy .50AE Desert Eagle, opinions?
I have been shopping for a 50cal Desert Eagle. Been wanting a DE for years but have always wound up buying a couple toys for what one DE costs. I have shot the 44mag version and was impressed with its low recoil. I don't like trying to feed rimmed ammo in an automatic, a little more prone to jamming I've found. Besides, if your going to have a 5 lb pistol it might as well have something that really booms. Any experiences? I know the 50 is like 30-40% more powerful than the 44 and that scares me. If it can be tamed, I want one[:D]

joey, there is nothing to really fear about these Desert Eagle fifties as the bark is far worse than the bite. I have a good friend who owns a DE .50 and I have fired his many times and while the recoil will never be confused with a .38 Special, I found it no worse than my own S&W Model 29 when firing full power loads. In fact I always felt that the DE .50 had a "smoooooother" recoil impuse than the harsh jolt from the .44 Magnum loadings from the M29. The DE is well designed so as to take the huge forces of the .50 caliber into account and the pistol's action spreads out the recoil forces.
What I don't like about the DE is that it is simply too large for me. I have pretty small hands for an adult male and the DE is just flatout too large for me to handle comfortably for any length of time. While there are many stock options for my S&W, the DE is more or less locked into its standard configuration. If you can handle the size and weight of the DE, I think recoil will be a more limited concern than you imagine. The huge power difference between the .44 magnum and the .50 does not equate into felt recoil...in my opinion at least.

The trigger has to much take up, it's like shooting a squirt gun one very long pull. The 50AE does not even come close to the 480 Ruger in felt recoil. Bye your powder in bulk you'll need it to fill the cases. My 2 cents. MERRY CHRISTMAS[:)] 0 -
I agree with Mark. The Desert Eagle in .50 AE is manageable. If you can shoot full power loads in a .44 mag. revolver, you will not have trouble with the .50. I would recommend that you get the later model, because you can switch barrels and and bolts and shoot other calibers. 0 -
I never could figure why they by-passed the .45 Win Mag in the DE. In a pistol, if bigger is better and a rimless cartridge feeds better from magazines, why did they ignore the .45? The grip can be made smaller for the .45 WM also. I can just barely get my stubby fingers around the grip on the AMT Automag IV and the .50 is just too big!
I just don't know why more makers aren't taking advantage of the .45 Win Mag cartridge. I like it,- a good pig round. The AMT loves the Speer 260 grain hollow point.0 -
I asked myself the same question a while ago, I have also wanted to see an SMG or small auto rifle chambered for 45 WinMag also. That round begs for a tactical use! 0 -
Someone made conversions on M-1 carbines a while back. I thought that action was too light for .45WM. Maybe that's why we aren't seeing them now.
Haven't tried the Grizzly, but I hear that it's a tad better than the AMT.
A Camp carbine in .45 WinMag would be a winner.0 -

I own one in 50AE. I put the 10" barrel on it and magnaported it. It can be shot with ONE HAND!!! I only go 170lbs, so that's saying something.
Also, if you buy the older model MK VII in 50ae, you can change that one into all of the other calibers as well. The MK VII's were made with diferent size frames, getting larger with the caliber. Therefore, the 50 being the largest, had the largest frame, and could be swapped out to all of the smaller calibers.
The trigger is a two stage, but very sensitive. Mine has two very discernable creep stages. Once I feel the take up after the second creep, I kow that very little pressure will result in firing. I actually think it is one of the best feeling two stage triggers I have felt on a pistol.
If you can't tell, I'm an advocate of, and very impressed with, the desert eagle pistol.
Speer gold dot 325gr or 300gr HP can be bought for $14.00/20, so it's not TOO bad on the pocket.

I have owned my .44 mag DE for over 12 years. In that time it has NEVER jammed. Rimmed cartridge or not.

Never seen one jam either, just worst case scenario. I could have one for 12 years and never have a problem either, but it would be my luck that it would stovepipe the first time I had a bear chewing on my leg.[:D][^][:D] 0
