45-70 Pistol???
I saw a pistol the last night and the owner said it was a 45-70. It was, I believe, a big revovler (don't know sgl action or not). Didn't even get the mfg'r. Anybody know anything about this piece? Who makes? Cost? Is the caliber any good in rifles for medium sized game and at what distances?

Magnum Research is making a revolver in 45-70, called the BFR. Ot retails for around $800 I think. They are the same people who are making the Desert Eagle line of pistols.

I seen one at the gun show and was priced at 850.00.It was a monster of a gun,believe it was made somewhere in New England.It weighed as much as my rifle or least it felt like it did.
I own a 45/70 Marlin guide gun,good out to a 100 yards,just my opinion.

The BFR's now come in several calibers & barrel lengths; 45/70 Gov't was one of the first (if not THE first) calbers they made. Suggested retail is $999 but you can get them for $800-850.
You can get 45/70 in Thompson Center's Encore series of single-shot pistols too.0 -
I own a Thompson Contender in 45/70 12" barrel with a comp.it's a handfull to shoot.Wear gloves or it will beat up your hands.

A friend of mine owns a Phelps 45-70 single action revolver and it's a surprisingly soft shooter. It's weight, combined with the plow handle grip design, causes the gun to just roll in your hand when you fire it. One handed weak hand is a piece of cake.
The weight and size of this gun are also it's only drawbacks. It is HUGE. When layed alongside a Super Blackhawk it makes the Ruger look like a Bearcat. The owner of this gun isn't a big guy, only about 5'6 and 150, but he manages to carry it in a shoulder rig and shoots it well.
It's a cool toy that also makes for serious hog medicine.0 -

A T/C in 45/70, 12" compensated barrel will not be as easy to tame as a much heavier weapon in this caliber.
Physics is always at work (atleast in our typical universe) & can often be put to good use when dealing with the larger and/or more potent calibers.
Then there's the economics of shooting 45/70: you may not be able to shoot enough "factory" ammo in a lighter rig to beat yourself up much... get into reloading though & you can save enough & shoot more to do yourself some serious tendon damage, if you're not well & truly prepared.0 -

I don't think the 45/70 feels as bad as the 44 mag. The 45/70 always felt more like a push to me, than a kick like a 44 mag.

I agree with IRONSTICKS and grizzclaw.
The BFR 45/70 is a decent wheel gun. I bought mine about 18 months ago and have run maybe 250 rounds through it without a hiccup.
Mine has a 10 1/2" barrel which helps reduce recoil but the gun itself is well balanced.
Obviously I do not go out and run through 50/60 rounds like I might my Glock 23. But, popping off 20 + at a time isn't too bad.
