What is 12ga Liner Cartridge? - Update -
Found an interesting shotgun, but I don't know what it is. It is a model 1100 Remington marked 2-3/4" 12ga Liner Cartridge Only. The barrel is broached with straight rifling with 6 grooves at 60 degrees. the grooves are about .115 wide and .010 deep. I can't find anything in my books on this cartridge. I can get it cheap, but I don't know if I want it.
Does anyone know what this is?

According to Remington, the "Liner" cartridge is for firing feeder lines from ship to ship. They are also marked "12GA Liner Cartridge Only" on the floor plate and reciever (I did not see these markings). These receivers will not "auto" function for safety reasons, and must be hand ejected by pulling the lever. They will not fire standard 12GA shells and any attempt to do so will jam the gun. They said they were made on contract basis, and not sold to the public. They would like me to tell them where this gun is so they can remove it from the publics hands. I will do so after I do some more checking. This gun may be a standard receiver with a "liner" barrel. If so, I'll but it and change out the barrel.
The NRA is on our side!

I have not heard of anything like this. What is the barrel length, sights, any other markings? Hey, if it is cheap, get it
and put another barrel on it.

Could it be that what you have is a "line thrower" IE: a gun that is used to throw a signal line (light rope that is used to haul progressivly heavier ropes) between ships.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
I've never seen a reference to such a cartridge, although admittedly shotshells are definitely not my focus of interest / expertise. All the line-throwing cartridges of which I've read or which I've seen have been .45-70 BLANKS, but the terminology suggests this could be something of that nature. Obviously, with rifling, there is some sort of projectile involved.
Myself, I'd contact Remington - if they marked the barrel, they must know what it is. I'd be very interested to hear the answer.0 -
could it be a "KILN" gun??? used to fire slugs inside idustrial furnaces and kilns to remove deposits of ash and coke from the kiln lining??? i have seen "kiln" slugs in 8, 10, &12 gauge at shows. i have several rounds in my collection. just a thought.

Why bother to buy it and change out the Barrel....? Buy it for the Collector value, as you will have probably one of the VERY VERY few in Civilian Hands, and that can and will command a Premium well above the Cost of a Common Shooter...If Remington wants this Gun Bad enough, it would behoove them to Offer you a Brand New Pump Action Shotgun in exchange for this liner Gun....Another thing comes to mind...Have you looked under the Name PARADOX GUN...? Look at Cartridges of the World...Frank Barnes makes mention of the PARADOX Gun...it could Shoot Slugs and and Shot...Not that you have one...But is an interesting appendem.....

dheffley, buy the gun and trade it to Remington for a new shotgun and a box of "Liner" shells - I bet we could work out a deal on the shells!!! If this is a contract item, that means it's military, in which case I **WANT** a round for my collection!!!!!!!! And I'm sure my collecting buddies would want one, also. 0
