Remington considered the .244 to be a samll game cartridge and rifled their barrels with a 1/12 twist. Remington tried to rejuvenate the round by making the twist 1/10 and calling it a 6MM instead of the original .244 designation. Hope that helps.

I bought two 721's that were custom built by Dave's Customs here in Phoenix years ago. One is a 6mm with the factory bull barrel and the other is a 30.06 with about a #4 ISW (?) barrel on it? I was suprised by the accuracy of the 6mm in particular. With the bipod or sandbags it will hit a watermelon at 500-700 yds. The 30.06 hasn't been adjusted for a particular distance yet but is shooting really good groups. I heard that Remington discontinued the 721's years ago. I couldn't even get any info on the website. Also, anyone happen to have the twist rate for the factory bull barrel 6mm. Seems to like 80 gr rounds over 100 grainers, figured it was probably due to twist rate. Thanks in advance.

my father has a 721 in .30-06 with the 24" BBL. with iron sights at 100 yds from the bench it cloverleafs 3 round groups. we just installed a BSA 3-9x42 iluminated reticle scope, but have not tested it yet. i will check his extensive file and see if i can find your info. these are great guns, and often overlooked. best regards, mike.

The Remington Model 721A was made from 1948 to 1962 in .264 Win., .270 Win., 30-06, .264 Win. Mag. and .300 H & H Mag... The first three had 24" barrels and the Magnums had 26" barrels. The Magnums had a 3 round box magazine and the rest had a 4 round box magazine. I bought a 721 in 30-06 caliber in 1960 and kept it until about 3 years ago. It was a good shooter. I killed mule deer, antelope and javelina with it. A friend of mine bought one in .300 H & H Magnum and liked it also.

This one has a factory 22" bull barrel, can't find anything like it...Pretty rare I'm guessing. I've seen 24 & 26" bulls on the 700.
