222 Remington Magum?

How hard is ammo in this caliber to find and is it expensive?

    Henry O, The 222Magnum is what is known as an "obsolete" caliber (that is not currently being loaded in factory ammo) but is a true performer!!! I know where there are a few boxes of original factory ammo in a little shop for I beleive 16.00 a box. They are loaded with 55Gr Rem PSP. I have been shooting this caliber for over 20 years and even have a custom rifle chambered for it. It is ballistically superior to the 223. Not by much but it is superior. (I'll get a bunch of responses from that statement) I have one box of factory loads that are the old green and white box that I'll sell you if you want them. I can also help you with loading data if you need it. GHD

    The .222 Magnum became the .223 Remington. I have data for the magnum, but they're very close to the same thing ballistically. Using a 55 grain bullet the starting load in the mag is 1 grain more of IMR4064 (24 grains), the max load is 27 grains. It's a bit faster(1-300 fps) but not enough to matter. The mag. is 100 thou longer in trimmed case length but only 20 thou with the bullet. Considering the availability of the .223, it's likely not worth bothering with the magnum.

    sunray, The 222Magnum and 223 Remington are two different cartridges designed by Mike Walker, a Remington engineer. The 222Mag did not become the 223!!! The 223 was chosen for small arms automatic weapons due to the fact that the shorter neck seemed to function better in the semi and automatic weapons. The 222Magnum was first chambered commecially in 1958 and the 223 in 1964. The 222Magnum saw some action in the Benchrest circles in its day while I can find no record of 223 ever having been a Benchrest cartridge. Just my little history tidbit for the day! GHD

    Thanks for the replies. I'm sure my ignorance exceeds my knowledge by a factor of 1,000,000 or so. That's why I love this forum.
