friend bought preban in MN, needed pistol permit #
This monday one of my coworkers bought a preban Colt AR15 from a local gun store in one of the west-south-west suburbs of the Twin Cities, MN. They said they needed his pistol permit #. And that it was required for certain preban weapons. What's the deal with that?

Hello Greenlantren...... Yes, That is true.... Anything you buy in Minnesota that is an "ASSUALT WEAPON" You need an "Minnesota State Permit to Acquire a Handgun" That came about maybe 4 years back. AND! Even COPS need to do that. Sucks? Right! [:(!]

That blows big-time! Surprised I never heard about it going into effect or being voted on (if indeed it was up for vote and not railroaded through somehow). 0 -
We've had the same law here in Maryland for several years. It seemed just a minor inconvenience.....until a few months ago, when the DC-area sniper struck: then the police started visiting registered owners of AR-15 clones and asked them to produce the gun.
Of course, the real perps had stolen their gun from a dealer in another state.

Sounds like more fun than the cold-shoulder I'm getting tonight. Sat down in the chair with the future misses to watch a movie and she commented that there used to be more room in the chair when we first started going out. I guess I must have agreed a little too quickly! [B)][:D] 0 -
You'll learn your place, eventually. For some, it takes years.....

It's not really all that onerous to get your MN state permit, all they do is check NCIC, and make sure you live where your driver's license says you live. It's free, too. But I didn't know it was ever needed for any type of long gun.

Chunkstyle, There is a bit more to the check than that.. They do check to see it you have ever have been arrested of Domestic Violence, You don't need to have been convicted of it, You could have a case pending. This would stop you from getting the Permit. [:)]

You go to the Police dept/city hall for your suberb, fill out the standard form, turn it in. Like ItGoBang says-your record is checked, OK'd, and it comes in the mail, usually in a week. Need it to buy at gunshows or arrival to FFL of anything bought on the Web. This, of course, is for all handguns, hadn't heard about AR's... 0 -
It's just for handgun and assult weapons. And we have another thing that's dumb in the Minnesota laws. I have not sold one but it has to do with black powder guns. As far back as I can remember, A Black Powder gun is a NON GUN; No 4473 to buy it. The State of Minnesota says it is a FIREARM now if the black powder gun has a firing pin that is in-line with a cap; you need to do a 4473 on the gun.. Lots of problems with this law. Some stores would sell them and not do the 4473, (Wal-Mart, K-Mart & Sam's Club) and a few others.... If I get time this week, I will get a copy of the laws and post them. [:D]

Oh, I have done it, I just didn't know what exactly the local cops did to approve it. I imagine it's not all that different from NCIC.
