High Standard Experts
Hello all, I have a High Standard Supermatic Trophy that is not blued but some sort of matte finished stainless, chrome, or electroless nickel or whatever. I was wondering if the factory ever offered this treatment or if it was done after-market. It is a Hamden Conn. gun with 5 1/2" bull barrel serial no ML15XXX. The sights are blue. Your pistol was made in 1975 or 1976. Quite frankley I have never seen any High Standard automatic model that was not blued, other than the Sport King which was available factory nickel plated. The Trophy's were polished and blued to a very exacting standards and were also available with what was called the "Super Blue", which was a very dark (nearly black) finish that was so rich looking it was best described as looking dipped in oil. High Standard did some of the finest blueing on their firearms that was ever done in this country, only the pre-war Colts could be considered better in that regard, in my opinion.
Your Hammden Pistol was considered to be the last of the traditional High Standards. The company by that time was being run (into the ground) by Leasure Group who were milking the firm for as much cash as they could squeeze. The Hamden pistols were the final guns made fully in house. Once the move was made to East Hartford the quality dropped off fairly quickly as the facility was so small that sub contracting became the rule of thumb. Blueing, polishing, and wood working for the grips was done off site and many small parts were made by other contractors as well. While not exactly junk, they simply were not as well put together and there is little collectors interest for these guns in other than NIB condition. Your pistol, which I believe has been refinished, will be an excellent shooter and is of very high quality manufacture.

HiStandard did offer a pistol with a finish such as yours. It was a pistol designed for hunters & bush pilots. Instead of the push release for the barrel it had an allen screw you had to remove to get the barrel off.If memory serves me it was made in the late 70s or early 80s. 0 -
The Blue Book says,Survival Pack Sharpshooter "M" or Citation 11 electroless nickel ,allen screw takedown packaged in canvas carring case with extra nickel mag. Disc.1984.
