Ive been refinshing guns for 25yrs and for using mineral spirits i would not mix it with Tung Oil Mineral spirits will raise the grain in the wood, and to rub it in cross grain-all that will do is lay the grain over.Tung oil can be thinned with paint thinner.

    Good Luke!

Paint thinner is what you should be using. Avoid mineral spirits...

"Paint thinner" can cover a wide range of solvents. A lot of oil base paints are thinned with mineral spirits. Alcohol is generally used with shellac products. Does it say on the tung oil can what thinner to use with the product? Does the grain really need filling or just a buildup of tung oil, sanded between coats, to achieve a smooth finish. On a walnut stock, a beautiful finish can be obtained using boiled linseed oil and rottenstone. Not a lot of talent required, just plenty of elbow grease
