browning bps
Hi everyone,
I have a Browning BPS 20 gauge pump. It was manufactured in 1983. The barrel is not set up for a choke, and I am wondering if it will be ok for duck hunting. It will hold both 2 3/4 and 3" shells. Someone at Dick's told me that these non-choke barrels are set up like a full choke barrel. Is this true or should I be looking for another shotgun? Thanks

I have a Browning BPS 32" rib vent barrel in 12 gauge with 3 chokes thinking about getting rid of it wandering what it would be worth thnx 0 -
I don't know about yours, but the A-5's have a mag lock lever so you can eject the chambered round and block the next rounds in mag.
Flip the lever with the bolt back and pop a round into the chamber

I have a 12ga BPS that I bought in 1979 (love it). It has the magazine cut-off. As far as I know, it was a standard item, at least that's the way the owner's manual shows it. I think they did away with it on later models. 0 -
This item was making me crazy. I too have a 12 ga BPS wood stock "Hunter" model made in 1990 (I think, based on the "NM" in the serial number) and I thought surely that feature couldn't have eluded me for 11 or 12 years. I went to my cabinet to look and mine does not have the cut-off so I guess it predates 1990, or maybe it is a feature of the BPS "Stalker" model? Mine is a basic Invector-type but I believe there were earlier models with fixed chokes, so apparently the BPS is an ever-evolving item. Anyway, what a great place to learn stuff! Best, Jim

Thanks guys, 1 more important thing is, browning aftermarket barrels dont quite work on this gun (ejection locks up tight)what a mother! That might be the reason browning quit selling after market barrels for the bps. I guess I got an expensive boat anchor.

Al, My 2002 Browning catalog lists BPS barrels in the three chamber lengths but they aren't cheap:
2-3/4", $228.00
3", $228.00
3-1/2", $257.00

Thats about right, I purchased a 3" 24"w/tubes they sent me a 22"w/ tubes. After I locked it up I called they said some of the older models needed to be modified to use that barrel. (no returns on used)
So I went and bought its big brother 10 ga... no problems with it. The guys I hunt with tell me to put training wheels on it and haul it like a howitzer behind the truck.(they dont like my reach advantage.)Ill end up selling the short barrel when I get around to it.

For whatever it's worth--My BPS is a 1979 model ($252 new) 12ga with a 30" barrel, fixed full choke. I've used it a lot for hunting doves, pheasants, prairie chickens, ducks, geese, and even quail. It's a big ol' long gun, but it is nicely balanced, and I like it better than my Remington 870 (a nice gun but I just can't shoot as well with it). The magazine cut off is a sleeve about 1/2 inch long on the outside of the magazine tube where the tube comes together with the receiver. You simply rotate it to the single position, and the gun will eject a fired round but will not upload another from the magazine. I never use the feature, and doubt too many people would, so that's probably why Browning got rid of it. The only problem with the gun now is that I'm not sure it's okay to shoot steel shot through it. That restricts my use of it somewhat. Otherwise, I love it. It's been good to me......... 0
