Ihave an 870 12 guage with a 3" chamber i like the extra full choke with winchester supreme high velocity 3" magnums 1 3/4 oz with 6 shot. 4 Shot might be better to someone else but I like 6's for the shot count of about 175-200 more pellets. I used to use 2oz loads than found out my gun patterned better with the 1 3/4 loads at a higher velocity. 30 yards is a good place to start.here is a good one i also have a 3 1/2 mag the 3" guns consistantly puts more pellets in the head and neck area of a turkey target at 50 yards. Now i am not saying I go out hunting to kill birds at 50 yards. I never had trouble calling in to at least 30 yards infact the last few gooblers were shot at under 20 yards at that distance almost blown there heads off. Hope this will help you out. 0 -
Thanks Kimber, I will try your suggestion, Have never gotten to serious about pattering my gun, doing my homework now to improve on my odds, thanks again, Villa 0 -
Shotguns are like rifles or other firearms in that no two will shoot exactly the same with like ammo. You will need to try a variety of loads to determine which preforms best in your gun. Pattern your gun at the distance you expect to shoot. 40 yards is a good start. 0 -

Thanks labwild, my gun loves winchester 2 3/4 rifled slugs, tried a lot of other brands, even cleaning between 5 shots and there was no comparison!, what size shot do you use for turkeys?0 -
I am using Winchester Supreme 3.5 in. H.V. Turkey Loads with 2 oz. of No. 4 shot. I shoot these in a Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag and get a good number of pellets (10 plus) in the kill zone out to 50 yds. The 835 has an extra full turkey choke and hi-viz rifle style sights. Kicks like a mule!
I also had good luck with ACTIV 3 in. Penetrator II loads. They had 2.25 0z. of No. 4 x No. 6. I can not find them anymore.0 -
Ah thanks for the info, I got all winter to find one that works for me, I will get some 3 inch mags and shot my tail off untill I get good results, thanks again, villa 0 -
I hunt with a Rem 1187 and prefer a full choke with winchester supreme high velocity 3" magnums with 6 shot. Any TOM within 30 yards gets carried out of the woods. 0 -
I have been using Remingtons duplex turkey loads. 23/4" with both 4 and 6 shot. They pattern well in both of my shotguns. 0 -
Just thought i would throw in my 2cents worth.I am surprised that nobody has mentioned no. 5 shot.My favorite shotshell for turkey is Rem. Premier 3" no. 5's 2 oz. of shot.I am sure all loads mentioned will do the job.I guess i am just a fan of 5 shot. When lead was legal for ducks,i used nothing else. 0 -
I shoot Federal Premium 3" mags number 6 shot out of an 1187 remington SP with .665 full choke. 0
