Belgium Browning Auto 5
I have a Belgium Browning 12 ga. Auto5 magnum w/ VR. Made in 1959
It has Auto 5 on receiver but will only hold 3 rounds...
Was this made for water fowling or is there something wrong with it?
it doesn't have a plug in it as far as I can tell.

The magazine should hold 4 rounds,plus 1 in the chamber.I have never seen an auto 5 that didn't.If magazine only takes 2 rounds i believe you will find a plug in the tube. 0 -
It is not really relevent to this thread but Browning made an automatic shotgun prior to WWII that only held two in the magazine.
I recently sold one in 16 ga that was marked on the forearm Browning Three Shot. It was the first one I had ever seen but it is pictured in the 1939 Gun Digest. Except for the safety, it looked exactly like what has since become known as the Auto 5. I would bet that swnoel's gun has a plug in it.0 -
Hello and welcome to this forum. I believe you may have a plug in your A-5's magazine and it is likely the Belgian wooden plug. You cannot hear it rattling around and you have to do a little disassembly to see it. If you want to make sure, COMPLETELY EMPTY SHOTGUN MAGAZINE AND CHAMBER and set yourself up in a clutter-free setting, preferably over a soft fabric pad. Remove the barrel as though you were going to rearrange the recoil friction. The fore-end of the magazine tube has a metal cover that is held in place under friction and it is backed by a semi-compressed spring. The cap is thin "spring" steel generally with a hole in the middle (donut-like) and you should be able to see the top of your plug in the center of the cap. If you carefully remove the cap (caution, it will want to launch through the room) you should find the plug. These plugs are troublesome to remove and insert in the field so lots of folks have replaced them with 5-1/2" lengths of #2 pencil or dowel, but I would urge you not to discard your plug as they are selling upwards of $20.00/$25.00 today, and I would sorely like to have one. Anyway, if you are unsure about doing all this, checkout the Browning site at (www.browning.com)and you'll find "manuals" under "products" or "services" and its html version is clear and illustrated. It does not say Auto 5 on the receiver, all it says is magnum.0 -
Dahhh...
I took out the spring in the magazine and low and behold a wooden plug with made in belgium came out, after a little prodding...
