Basically the 300 WSM will be more accurate, efficient, better ballistics, and have less recoil and in a lighter gun than its longer 300 Win Mag sibling. i would definately choose it over the conventional magnums or standard calibers in its power class.

My Son has a Browning .300 WSM.. I have a Savage 10 .300 WSM(switch barrel, have 'em all). So far only a couple deer and an antelope.

The Savage is light and still isn't bad, recoil wise. I have a straighter stock in the mail. It'll kick even less then. We're keeping ours.

I have one in Winchester Stainless Control Round Feed Pre64. It sticks just a bit going in if had been able to play with one first I would not have purchased that one. Recoil I can not feel the difference between the 300 WSM and the 300 Win Mag. Ammo you have a large selection with the 300 Win Mag For reloaders 300 Win mag Brass is more available than 300 WSM Brass. In short if I were to do it again I would purchase the 300 Win Mag.[8D]

I do not have a WSM. I have a push feed 300 Win Mag that is fantastic! Shoots accurately, feeds well, and does not burn a bunch more powder for velocities that are beneficial (in the real world, not paper) only at distances beyond 400yds.

Now really, how many guys (not on a range in weather you CHOOSE to go shooting in) would shoot at distances beyond 400 yds...in what mother nature gives you for weather? If it is a guided hunt...once you shoot their statistics show 'the DUDE got a shot'. Hit or miss.

Stick with what you can practice with (a lot) at 400 yards and even in the bad weather - - -

If you want a short action 300 mag I highly recommend one of ht e Lazzeroni Savage 16 LZ Patriots. The price is right and my rifle gives consistent three shot pattterns at 100 yds that fit under a dome. The recoil is not bad and the rifle is rugged. I like the detachable magazine too.

muskox2000 is correct, of all the wsm's the lazzeroni patriot is the best (and the savage is a great rifle), IF you are willing to reload or pay much higher prices for ammunition. I personally dont reload much so i choose the winchester version.
