Another "newbee" question
My father asked me, recently, which is a bigger and more powerful round of semi-auto ammo, the .45 or 9mm? I did not know the right answer. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

That is actually a tough question to answer. From a pure KE perspective, the 9mm can often have more ft-lbs of energy than the 45. However, as most of us can attest what the 45 lacks in KE it more than makes up for in its ability to transfer its energy rather than overpenetrating and expending itself downrange. Although it is slower than the 9mm (hence less energy, KE=mass*velocity squared) it also has apx twice the weight (mass) and larger cross section. Therefore the 45 is a more powerful manstopping cartridge, while the 9mm is occasionally the higher "powered" cartridge. 9mm is a good SMG cartridge. The 45 is a good handgun cartridge. [:D] 0 -

Well, on a body hit, the .45 usually doesn't exit....and that's one of it's main advantages. It transfers ALL of it's energy to the target. 0 -

I was shot 3 years ago by a man carrying a Firestar .45 at near point blank range. He was shooting federal hydroshock ammunition in it and all but one fragment exited my left shoulderblade. The round stayed mostly in tact except for 1 or 2 shards that broke off. The entrance wound was barely a half inch in diameter however the exit wound had torn my flesh into a 2 inch wide gash after it had passed through my lung. The damage to my body was tremendous and it laid me down in a single round and I am not a small person at 6'3" 290lbs. The impact alone nearly flattened me right off the bat. All this for the $11 I had in my wallet.
Fortunately, for me and mabye his next would-be victim, I was also packing heat that night in the form of a Taurus Titanium 45LC snubby. When he asked me for my wallet (or my sh*t as he called it) I reached under me for my pistol and as he looked up and away from me to scan for anybody watching I nailed him with all 5 rounds. Then I passed out for the next 3 1/2 days to wake up in a hospital bed with tubes running out of my body to god knows what and just a little over 2 years of rehabilitation and other surgeries.
The .45 in either form (Colt(LC) or auto) is a truly devastating round to the human body especially in some of their more wicked forms of hollowpoints and flat nosed (semi wadcut) rounds.0 -
My theory that night was that if I was going to die there in a pool of my own blood over the $11 in my wallet, so was he. 0 -
