rem .35 vs the 308
I just went to a 308,150 grain nosler Ballistic tip with h380 49 grains From a 35 rem 180 grain. I thought the 308 would kill the deer faster but the deer go further with the 308. Two does that were 10-30 yrds went over 100 yrds with a lung shot right behind the shoulder. Another went 60 yrds. I am use to the deer falling down with in sight. Its funny with a 2X lung shot with my bow the deer fall down faster the with either rifle. I guess its the loud sound. I often wonder if the meat would be better with a head shot.

Lung shots will not bring a deer down immediately regardless of the caliber of weapon. I have shot deer with the 35, 308, and 06. All of them are equaly effecitive. Short range in brush, there is nothing better than the 35. However over 100 yards I want to 06 or 308.
There is more shocking power with the 35 and a well placed shot to the heart will usually drop them where they stand. I have never had a deer run more than 50 yards. A head shot or neck shot will produce instant results however there is a lot more margin for error with these shots.0 -
at ranges under 125 yds the .35 rem will out perform the .308 in knockdown power and terminal energy every time. it is not as accuratte(your shooting deer, not 10X`s) and is almost worthless past 200 yds. having said that i would pick the .35 rem over the .308 for short range shots on deer every time. just my humble opinion.

I agree with pahunter & mrmike. I hunt with bow, shotgun slugs, a 30/30 Win, and 30-06. By far the quickest kills, in my experience, were with the 30/30. I believe it must have something to do with the lightly constructed, quick expanding (I use the Winchester Silvertip exclusively) and that virtually all the available energy is expended WITHIN deer-sized game. The shotgun slugs are quick-killing also but the deer I've hit run farther than after being hit with the 30/30. Every 30-06 shot I've taken the deer run farther than after being hit with the 30/30 or a slug. I do not believe the energy is fully expended within the comparatively light body of a deer. I must add two qualifications here:
1) ALL shots were at less than 75 yards.
2) ALL shots have been solid lung hits.
The higher lung hits seem to drop 'em slightly faster...I guess the blood fills the lungs without opportunity for draining.
Bow shots in the lungs drop deer similar to hits with a shotgun slug.

Hey bud,I am not sure how but slow it down a deer is very thin skined also you need a bullit that expands very easy and gives all its energy inside the deer and not just zing on through also depends on yardage of shots just my 2 cents 0 -
if you like the .35 remington, you might want to look at the remington 350 mag. i love mine. remington's going to reintroduce the ammo this year as well as a new gun called the 673 which is similar to the old model 600. 0 -
I use a .308 and 180 grain Fail Safe rounds from Winchester. Everythig I have shot from 300lb bear to several deer have gone down in one shot . Its all about the shot placement not the round. 0 -
Love those big-bore lever's...I really do and have about 7. But if your can have only one rifle go with the 308...who say's you have to use spire pointed bullets??? If you reload or have a friend reload...I suggest you give some thought to the ROUND NOSE soft points in .308...there is an AWFUL lot of lacking information about how truly devasting a round nose is when lauched at velocities higher than from a lever using the same bullet design......If you do some digging on this info I know you will be suprised....even out to 250+ yards... Here is another way to look for an answer to your question: will a 35 do at 200 yards what a 308 can do? Conversely a 308 can do at 100 yard's whatever a 35 will do with abit more alacrity and speed.....and this brush bucking dilema...better do some research on this. There is no conclusive evidence that high speed is any better than a heavy bullet in brush country. This issue has been addressed a number of time's in Guns & Ammo and Shooting Times. One writer even set up targets and 100 yards in brush country and shot his lever big bores and his beanfield rifles thru the brush they were all deflected from point of aim...
