With a little shopping, you can probably find a Leupold VX-I 2-7 X 33mm. Be hard to go wrong with that.

You should take a look at the Weaver V9 or V10. I have a V10 on a Marlin .357 rifle, and it works very well.

The Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 is a good one and right in your price range.

.44 mag rifle probably for deer 100 yds. and under if so I'd go for a red dot with 4 moa dot very good in the thick stuff.

I would look for a shotgun scope about 2.5x. I put one on a 45-70 Marlin and it is just about perfect. The rate of drop is such that a high magnification scope is not that useful. A shotgun scope will also give you more eye relief.

I had a 3 x 9 x 32 mounted on raised scope mounts on my Ruger .44 semi-auto carbine (the old style, not the new ones...). That way I could use my open sights for the close shots, and the scope for further ones. Yes, 9x would generally be a little high for a 100 yard or less shot, but I have had deer go into a thicket and not come out, I cranked up the scope to 9x and shot it through the thicket. I think it was maybe going to bed down there.
Otherwise, I'd recommend a blackpowder or shotgun scope, or if you can afford it, the redfield widefield.
