more recoil questions .308 vs 7mm.08 vs 25.06

how does the recoil compare for these various rifles? also would i notice a difference shooting a 150 gr bullet from a .308 vs from a 30.06? do the short action calibers have less recoil if bullet weight is the same? thanks for all the input. I soon hope to pick which gun I want.

    First I think a short action would have slightly more recoil than a long action,because the short action weighs less.The recoil of the 30-06 with 150 gr bullets exceeds that of the .308.The .308 is not at all uncomfortable to shoot and is suitable for most any North American Game.As for the 25-06 I personaly dont like the caliber,thats not to say it isnt a good caliber,but the .25 caliber bullet is not as well suited for Elk or other large game.HTH

    I just went to a 308 browning A- bolt 2. It kicks less than my old .35 rem. It easy on the arm. It has a nice recoil pad and maybe the design is good but for a light rifle its low kick and fun to shoot. I thought about the 7mm o8 but don't think the 10 grns less 140 Vs 150 for the 308 makes a big difference, the 308 is more versatile.

    rugster, I'm just going to have to stop in Wytheville and let you shoot a real gun sometime!!! Maybe go find a chuck or two in Wythe Co and let you see just how much fun DEVASTATION SUPREME can be!! Maybe we can find an elk there and try out a Partition on him too!!! hehehe!!! GHD

    Hey Leadlobber,

    There is something to that "good design" theory. I have a .270 Ruger that I put a Ramline synthetic on. It had the same configuration as the factory wood but was lighter and easier to carry. It also kicked the dog doo out of me, even with 130 gr. bullets.

    My son has a 7mm Rem. Mag. on a Rem. action that sports a gawdawful looking, so-called custom, stock. I shot it and found that seemed to kick considerably less than my .270. Something haywire here? I did some measuring and found a stock that matched my sons stock. It is a Bell and Carlson Carbelite. It has way less drop than factory. It's now not just manageable. It is a dream to shoot.

    By the way, the kickingest medium bore rifle I ever shot was a .308 Ruger 77UL. I love the looks of a Ruger but almost swore off of them til I found Carbelite stocks. I have five of them but you can round-file their factory stock.

    I prefer the 7mm-08. This caliber works on game from deer to elk to even the varmits. This load has very little recoil. My 10 year old son shoots one and he loves it. I also shoot one. I have yet to kill a deer with mine that i did not see drop in the scope. My son also claims to have seen his drop in the scope. If a 10 year old that weighs 65 pounds soaking wet can handle one surely you can.

    I agree with bullhauler I have two 7mm-08 remingtons one is a 700 with a 20" custom barrell shoots 1/4" 200 yd groups and the dear just fall the other is a seven I bought for my son on his 11th birthday [so I could get mine back] he weighs about 65 pounds and loves both of them. The model seven does seem to kick a little more though, about a half pound difference between them.
