B-West AK47s and Heat Treated Receivers Info
Gentlemen,
I am tossing this information out to those who may have, or may stumble into a B-West manufactured AK47. Those of you who are familiar with these rifles know they have an interesting history, which led to several being producted using US made receivers and Chinese parts kits. Unfortunately, the manufacturer was trying to get as many receivers/assembled firearms out as he could before the ban (actually, the ATF shut him down for other reasons as well), and many complete rifles were sold with soft receivers. No doubt the unassembled receivers that were sold have the soft receiver problem as well.
My fortunate participation in a popular AK47 discussion board (which I will not mention by name, due to possible infringement on competiton stipulations specified by gunbroker) has led me to discover a wonderful gentleman who once worked at B-West. This gentleman is heat treating these receivers, and refinisheing them at no charge for members of this particular AK47 discussion board. I recently sent him a pre-ban B-West that was assembled (prior to the ban) using a B-West receiver and a Polytech parts kit. That was one of the methods of manufacture for B-West. I felt his generosity was considerable, and in talking to him he certainly was quite knowledgeable on AK47s, as well as several other firearms. For that reason I sent him an extra $100.00 just to "spruce up" the AK, and he has done a wonderful job of it.
I will soon post a photo of the re-heat treated/finished/spruced firearm, and hope those interested in the AK47 will take note of it. For those who know the history of B-West and similar AKs built during the 80's using US receivers and foreign parts kits, I believe this represents an opportunity to take an AK of dubious quality (which might be purchased at a discount for that reason) and transform it into a fully functional, completely reliable, pre-ban assault rifle.
So, for those who might find this information valuable for future (or current) reference, please remember it. If in 6 months or a year from now you might need this info, post a message and I'll probably still be around to fill you in on necessary details.
