Red Dot sights
There is a huge difference in the prices of red dot sights. $40 for the inexpensive ones. $300 for the holographics and upwards. What are the differences? Someone explained the concept of parallax to me today. How much does parallax really affect point of aim. It still has to be better than iron sights, right?

I was looking for some information in regards to what brand of red dot sight to use. I was looking at using it on a .44 magnum single action revolver for deer hunting. The problems I am concerned about would be dependability & durability as well as parallax variations. The other thing I have run into is the true "Dot" size as stated by the manufacturer. The one I have now is listed as a 4" dot (Redfield ESD) but appears to be closer to a 7" or 8" when viewed at 100yds. I would prefer something in a true 2" to 4". I have an old tasco propoint pd2 which states its a 5" and that appears to be correct (It may actually be smaller) when viewed at 100yds. Does anyone know how the tascos hold up under heavy recoil.The other ones which interest me would be the Nikon VSD,perhaps the newest Burris the old Leupold/Gilmores and maybe the Truglows. Also does anyone know for sure if the Aimpoints because of the way their designed truely are parallax free. Any information or suggestions especially ones based off actual use would be appreciated. On my Ruger Goverment Target Model, I have a Ultra Dot. The only red dot that I know of that has a lifetime warenty on it. I use the gun for outdoor Bulseye compition, 25 yard timed and rapid fire, and 50 yard slow fire. The dot is 4 moa. At 25 yards off the bench, using some good match ammo the gun will shoot 10 rounds under my thumb nail.
As for a mount, MGW makes one that fits into the dovetail for the rear site, my experince with these is that they fall off. I had mine drilled and tapped.0 -

I have an ultradot mounted to my Ruger 22/45. I've been pleased with it, but it's the only red dot sight I've owned or shot with, so I don't have much basis for comparison.
Definitely get the 4 MOA dot. Any bigger is too large for target work. The 4 MOA dot is good at 25 to 50 yards.
Regarding mounts, make sure you check out the SoLow mount, specifically made for mounting red dot sights to Ruger pistols. My red dot is mounted with the solow mount. It was easy to install and looks great.

The clamp on mounts that some have recommended can cause jamming malfunctions. B-Square makes a mount that is like a rail that mounts by removing the front and rear sight. Not really a big deal. It doesn't move and does not cause malfunctions due to a too tight clamp style mount. Check them out at www.B-square.com.

The best on the market is the Bushnell Holosight but its big and expensive. It comes with 1 M.O.A. dot which is one of the finest dots on the market. If you decide on a tube sight check out the bushnell Trophy red dot. Its a 28 mm tube with four reticles (One 3 M.O.A. dot, one 10 M.O.A. dot, a cross hair and a circle with the dot in it). Its pretty cool it comes with rings and a lifetime warrenty. 0
