Varmint ?s 308 vs 22-250
I love the 250 but the nato round is easy to find and doesn't cost
an arm and a leg to target. Any opinions?

What kinda varmits? big ones or little ones? You hit them with a 308 and the little ones look like dust. What distance are you going to shoot. Split the mean and use a 25-06. It shoots flat and carries a whooop. 0 -

i can buy 40 count box winchesters with 45gr hp for 15.00$ that not to expensive then you can reload them to your liking. guess i have never ever had any trouble finding 22-250 shells here.

My choice is the .308. I already have an M1A so my next bolt gun will be in .308. with the wide selection of bullets including full metal there's not to much you can't load for. 0 -
Not being a smarta$$ but when did the .308 become a varmint round?
I know some companies like Remington offer 1 or 2 .308's in their Varmint line up ... but come on! if you consider the .308 to be a varmint round ... why not the 50 BMG!
I've always been told by everyone in the industry that Varmint rounds are 24 calibur and below ... some strech that with the .243 and even the 25.06 ... but .308 ... geeez, thats a game round ... IMHO

Kimber In the reloading selection there are berger 110's nosler 125's barnes 110's and 125's sierra 110 fmj's speer 110 hp varminter and sp's 125's 130's hornady 110 v-max (that stands for varmint) a 100 semi jacket. thats just the light stuff how bout bigger varmints. there is no rival caliber for bullet selection to the 30 cal. 0 -
I have to agree with kimberkid, 308 is not my idea of a varmit caliber.

GPWEAPON - I know about the lighter bullet weights as .308 is one of my favorite rounds and the most popular calibur in my safe closly followed by the .223 ... and, I too am a reloader.
BUT!
I could never understand the point of a lite weight 30 calibur, its larger size would be affected by wind and elements much more than the smaller caliburs of the same or lighter weights, nor could they attain the speeds of the smaller caliburs ... and I could never get a lite 30 to shoot decent groups from weapons such as my M1A or Remington VSSF(Varmint Synthetic Stainless Fluted)
To shoot a lite 30 I would think you would need a barrel with an extreamly slow twist or such a lite load you would need wadding to keep the powder within range of the primer flash ... at anyrate I don't think you would get any kind of decent preformance across the board except with the specific ammo/weapon combination ... If I'm wrong, please correct me - that's just my experiance.
Therefore I ask:
"Whats the point?"
BTW ... If the answer is "just because" I can understand that, I've done many things for the same "reason", even if it didn't make any sence

That's exactly why I say so much about twist rate as related to bullet weight. The argument for so many .30 cal bullet wieghts is a Mute point. Only a small range of those bullets will fly right, due to whatever the twist rate may be. Sure, you can charge them down to get a good group, but then your energy is what a smaller caliber would have produced with factory ammo. If the twist rate in a 308 isn't designed for 100-120 gr bullets, then it's a waste of time loading them when you could have bought a varmit gun to begin with.
The 308 being placed in the Varmit classification by Remington has nothing at all to do with the intended use,....it's to get around the stigma of any nato calibered, bull barreled rifle being called a Sniper Rifle by the anti's. It's just PC marketing, nothing else.
That being said, if you are hunting varmits and maybe deer out to 200 or 300 max yds (head and neck shot), then I would go with the 22-250. If it will be a deer hunting gun most of the time, I would get a 308. Purpose dictates caliber choice,... paper don't run away wounded!!

How much shooting are you going to do? If your going to fire 75 rounds in a day or more you would probably be more accurate with a 22-250. Even seasoned target shooters get recoil sensitive after a while. Im not talking flinching they just dont shoot as tight a groups after shooting lots of rounds. 0
