About the lowest priced and depenable you will find is the AK-47 style. The only drawback (if you reload) is they dent the brass when they eject.

When you mention .223 cheap](Dependable]If your wanting a good accurate gun the Saiga from EAA would fit the Bill. For an Assault type Rifle cheap/Reliable yap the AK would be a good choice.

I'd suggest the Mini-14, but not everyone puts it in the high esteeem category. Be careful about the accessories you buy for it; lots of junk third party accessories.

You could almost buy two of the Saigas for what the mini 14 costs.

I would never recommend a "cheap" gun to anyone. If you want a gun that is:

    - dependable
    - reasonably accurate
    - durable
    - servicable (parts available 10 years from now)
    - desirable by someone else (when you are ready to trade)
    - reasonably priced

...then go with the Mini-14. If "cheap" is acceptable by you, then you are the natural prey of merchants of junk.

    My humble opinion,

I've heard -- I believe on this bulletin board -- that the Saiga's are of questionable quality (compared to other .223 AK-type rifles, such as the SAR-3)

If the Mini-14 is within your price range, go for it without hesitation. It won't be a tack driver like an AR-type rifle that's decked out, but neither will a Saiga or any AK-type 223.
