25.06 vs 7mm08
As I decide on my next rifle, I have the choices pretty much narrowed down to the 25.06 or 7mm08. I simply dont like the recoil of 30.06 so please dont suggest it. I will be using the gun in wooded areas, and also in fields where long shots are possible (150-300+ yds; although I've never shot at a deer over 150 yds). I would also like a caliber that I can use on groundhogs since I do a lot of groundhog hunting in prep for deer season. So which one, the 25.06 or the 7mm08 ?

I like the 25-06. It shoots flat and is nothing more than a next down 30-06 that is a lot faster. Sweet shooter with not a lot of kick. Whistle Pigs had better look out. 0 -
I would opt for the 7 MM 08 it will work well in both wooded area's as well as long shots.And the recoil is lighter than that of the 25/06.

25-06!!! All you'll ever need for any deer and super varmint round!! As far as recoil, not a lot of difference especially if you choose a small light rifle like a Model 7 in 7mm-08! I honestly think that it is more felt recoil than my 25-06. Get a rifle with a synthetic stock and that will get rid of some of the recoil. Although both calibers will be good deer calibers, the 25-06 is the superior varmint caliber!! GHD 0 -

Since you want to shoot varmints, I believe the .25-06 to be your better choice. The 7mm does have a greater variety of bullet weights available, especially for handloaders. I really like my 7mm-08.

I would vote for the 7mm-08, I can see no need to burn that much powder to get a 120 grain bullet moving. 7mm-08 also gives more bullet weight flexibility up to 175 grains or so. The 25-06 you are limited to 120. If you were to want to hunt heavier gamethis could be limiting. The 25-06 is the king of varmiter rounds though, but I prefer the .223 for this because I am a scrooge when it comes to powder.

7mm-08 is my favorite deer cartridge.However,if you really want a dual purpose (deer-varmint)cartridge,i agree the 25-06 would be the best choice. 0 -
7mm-08. There should be no question here. The bullet offering is better than the 25-06 and I prefer a larger heavier bullet for deer. Also the 08 is a short action. That means stiffer action and this leads to better accuracy. Make sure you get a remington model 700. If you ever decide to build a custom you will have the best action on which to base your rifle. A 25-06 might work well on those tiny texas deer but I would never ever EVER consider shooting a large bodied(220lbs +) whitetail with one. Also that little bullet in wooded areas is a mistake. Too much chance of the bullet being deflected by small brush or twigs. So make the right choice and buy the 7mm-08. You wont be disappointed.

HAVE ONLY SHOT ONE 25-06 A BROWNING, IT DID NOT LIKE THE HEAVY BULLETS SO NOT TO GOOD FOR DEER SIZE GAME, THE 7MM-08 SEEMS TO LIKE ALL BULLET WEIGHTS AND LESS RECOIL, CHECK YOUR RELOADING BOOK ON PLOWDER WEIGHT VERSES FEET FER SECOND. 0 -
Just got back from a hunt in Kansas and have to admit a new found respect for the 25-06. One in our party carried one and after much discussion was present when he got a deer at about 350-400 yds. It dropped like a sack of potatoes!
I carried a 30-06 with 150 gr sbt and after a few test shots am now ready to trade my 30 in for the 25!0
