cleaning model 8
is there any tricks or things I need to know about disassembly and cleaning a model 8 remington. it is starting to not cycle and I think it just needs cleaned but I am afraid to disassemble without knowing what I am getting into.

The Model 8 was another Browning design, perhaps the first successful centerfire semi auto made and sold in the USA commercialy. There is nothing really hard about taking the rifle apart or reassembling it- according to an expert I called on the phone- but you needed a special wrench to remove the barrel nut and the handle of the same wrench served to remove the brarrel jacket bushing. Finding that tool today is pretty tough. I have a customer who shoots these rifles regulary (the one I phoned) and he uses a slim punch to remove the nut- put the tip of the punch in the holes of the barrel nut and tap the side of the punch...you may need to put the barrel in a padded vise. If the rifle has never been taken apart before you can count on needing the vise.
The barrel bushing is another problem. Try to find a flat piece of steel the same thickness as the the slot on the bushing. Unscrew it anti-clocwise and look out! The recoil spring will try to force its way out and it is powerful. The rest, according to my friend, simply involves the use of a standard screw driver and a punch to drift out the cross pin holding the magazine group to the receiver. Would I try these tricks on my own rifle? NOT A CHANCE! I'd take my rifle to a gunsmith and have him clean the thing and perhaps show me how the job is done (hint-hint). Good luck on this.

thanks I think I will make a spanner wrench and give it a try just wanted to make sure I wasn't unleashing a spring that would take out a wall. 0
