Long action/short action
After looking through the archives in "search" for this topic, I didn't find much, so I hope I'm not "whipping a dead horse".
I understand the differences with long action (30/06, .270, etc.) and short action (.243, .308, etc.) in bolt action rifles.
Question: Aside from the caliber differences, is there any advantage of one action over the other? So you mave have a little longer bolt-stroke with the long action, but is there that much difference in handling otherwise? Are short actions much nicer to shoot?

Short actions are several ounces lighter than long and also make a shorter, easier handling rifle.

You won't notice the difference when shooting, just when carrying and "coming up".

PLus with a short action it is easier to carry it through thickets and etc.

The diff is: short actions will except only cases up to a certain lengths, whereas the long action handles the longer cartridges. This consists of about 3/8 on an inch in the cartridge length handling capacity. Any other diff. are in the make and style of the rifle. In other words the diff. of the actions has nothing to do with anything except the length of cartride you can use. 0 -

The short action is also stiffer than the long action. This will stir up some heated debate, but the short actions will be inherently more accurate. Also, most short action loads(with the exception of some of the short magnums) have less recoil than the long action rounds and most are just as potent. I shoot a 7mm-08 ack. imp. exclusively. I get 3185fps with a 140grn barnes xlc with hardley any recoil. Try to find a 7mm mag that doesnt kick the *&@# out of you.

I bet my 7mm mag doesn't kick any more than your 7mm-08AI. But then again it's a sendero[:D] I personally love my 7mm-08, and it's not even a 700remington!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to correct the fact about the Remington 788's.
They were never made in a long action, .308 was the largest caliber made, yes if you look in the parts books the call the .308 long actions and they are longer than the .222 and .223, but by definition
they are all short actions.0
