Cleaning Kit?

I never bought a good quality cleaning kit. I don't know what to look for or how much they cost. I need it for rifles from 22-35 cal. and handguns from 22-45. Any suggestion and places to buy them would help. THANKS

    Actually go to WALL MART get your rods and brushed and patches, then order some BLUE WONDER gun cleaner, a Jar of "ARMADILLO" to replace the gun oil..

    And for Under 25.oo you will have everything you need.

    I keep my "Gun Maintenance Kit" in a US Army .50 Cal ammo box,, Seal tight lid, and in it is

    Pistol Rod, with brushes for every thing from .22 to .45
    Rifle Rod, with brushes for every thing from .17 to .50

    A bunch of various sized patches,
    A pack of 0000 Steel wool
    A tube of "BLUE WONDER" gun cleaner.
    A small jar of "ARMADILLO" Blue wonder, gun finish
    And in case I need it a can of Hoppe.s gun oil

    Whatever brand you buy, be sure that your rifle cleaning rod includes a bore guide. This is usually a brass ring that goes against the muzzle (for those rifles that can't be cleaned from the breech); it prevents the cleaning rod from rubbing against the bore and wearing it away.

    At the other end of the spectrum, I use Bore Tech rods, and Butch's Bore Shine. Once in a while I use a dab of JB's Bore Paste, if I buy a used one with a dark bore. I also use a bore guide which fits into the action of bolt actions, and prevents dripping solvent into the magazine or trigger mechanism.

    If a barrel is made of high quality steel, how can a brass brush or an aluminum rod damage the bore? The instructions for my Anschutz Model 1413 rifle emphatically state that only a wood cleaning rod and cloth patch must be used. It also states that the patch must be pushed through in one motion from the breech; no backward motion. I figure Anschutz knows a hell of a lot more than I do about cleaning guns so I follow their instructions. Still, I wonder......?

    Competition shooters will tell you that anything that goes through the bore should go the way a bullet does: breech to muzzle. I have had aluminum scrape off a rod more than once, maybe that is the objection. My bore tech rods are nylon coated.

    He Dog: That makes sense. As for the aluminum rod, I guess a slight aluminum deposit in the bore could affect the accuracy if you're looking for 1-hole results (which competition shooters certainly are doing!).

    I bought an "Outers" kit at wally world several years ago. Nice, and inexpensive. One complaint though. I went back and bought some brushes and jags for my pistols, and they won't fit the rod from the rifle kit! It is a 3 piece rod, so I thought the first section would be fine. But no! Have to buy separate rods. Also the same deal for shotguns. Have to buy separate rods. Is that common, or just Outers?

    Taxation WITH representation isn't so hot, either!

    Outers has a 'Rifle' Kit, a 'Shotgun' Kit, a 'Pistol' Kit, and a 'Universal' Kit. Your best bet is to get the Universal Kit and add brushes and jags. HTH.

    Hoppes also makes a similar kit. Also, I like to get "bore mops" - I use them for a final cleaning before I spray the bore with oil.

    So, here's my kit: Hoppe's bore cleaner (BreakFree or Shooter's Choice would do), pistol rod, long gun rod (with bore guide), rag patches, jags of the right sizes, brass brushes of the right sizes, bore mops of the right sizes, a tin of gun oil in liquid form, a can of oil in aerosol form, a cloth for cleaning the outside of the weapons, bits of wire & q-tips for hard to reach places, some steel wool, and a dropcloth for doing it on my desk, so as to not stain the finish.

    The thingy on the end of the cleaning rod that holds onto your patch.
    They come in several sizes and shapes.

    i just got a dewey rod they are spendy(26.00) but i dont think i have bad a better cleaning rod than a dewey it is one piece cleaning rod and is coated . the one i got is to big for anything under .277 so i will have to get a smaller one for the smaller bore rifles. as others have mentioned get a bore guide!
